My understanding is that besides running speedway meetings, in 1936 Barnet also ran some sidecar and midget car meetings.

This was posted by mimmo on the BSF today (Friday February 13 2009): Today, 06:50 PM Post #10 Group: Members Posts: 470 Joined: 19-August 04 Member No.: 3747 QUOTE (speedyguy @ Jan 30 2009, 11:59 AM) Can anyone help londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi with information on tracks at Barnet and Elstree please. All that is known so far is probable periods that they ran. Thanks. mimmo replied: Barnet staged its first meeting on the 27th July 1929 and operated until the end of 1936. Until 1934, it was a grass-track circuit, before cinders were put down. Former Norwich promoter Gordon Parkins took a few rides at the circuit prior to turning his full time attentions to the administrative side of the sport. When the lease at the Barnet Bypass site expired in April 1937, the promotion moved their operation to High Beech.

Interesting to see that there may have been sidecar racing at Barnet in the years before WW2. Any idea who the outfit teams were?

There were actually 2 tracks in Barnet.
Mays Lane (1929, closed later in season due to am adverse rating assessment) (1 mile from the Great North Road, near Barnet Fairgrounds)
Barnet Grass Speedway Barnet-by-Pass (now covered by Ripon Way and Balmoral Drive area, Borehamwood) There a couple of photos of this track shown in Speedway News in the 30's The grass wore away, and it became a Speedway surface I believe Tommy Price (Later World Champion) started his career here, along with a few other late 30's London riders Clerk of the Course was Alan Day, a former Stamford Bridge rider, later an ACU official.
Does anyone know the exact location of the Mays Lane track? Does anyone know the location of the Elstree track?

L C Lovell = probably Bob Lovell
GJ Wilks - must be George Wilks
That programme would be worth a lot of money IMO.

Does this Programme list the Meeting number on the front? C.S. (Cecil Stephen) Barrow rode for Southampton in SL 1929. C. Traynor may be Howard Traynor who rode for Harringay. T. Bryant could be Percy Bryant who also rode for Harringay. From memory there was a Ginger Bryant who rode at Barnet in 1929. I have a 1930 programme from Barnet Grass Speedway.Dated Saturday 20th September at 3pm. Special Challenge Match. Ringwood v Barnet.
