“Penlee Speedway New Zealand” by Winston Cartmell is the enthralling story of this family owned speedway track in the north island of New Zealand that ran from 1969 –1979. In 1968 Mr & Mrs Cartmell returned to the farm after an extended holiday to England. On arrival at the farm Mr Cartmell said “Whats going on here?”, Mrs Cartmell, who was in on the scheme said, “Why it’s a speedway track, dear!” During the parents absence the three Cartmell boys, Ivan, Winston and David had built a 325 meter speedway. Over the next decade several English riders and many New Zealand riders raced on this unique track .Bruce abernethy, Fred Pawson and Kevin Hayden were a few of the old time stars that helped in the background A truly lovely story packed with information by Winston Cartmell, former rider promoter and now a dedicated researcher.
