JUNIOR LEAGUES 1983::: Richard Waller, who is researching on Junior Leagues operating between 1982 and 1984, has forwarded me a page from ‘Speedway Mail’ dated May 20,1983. Somebody (!) named John Hyam was then writing a column ‘John Hyam’s Junior Jottings’ and this gives some guide to the leagues. It would appear that there were four competitions - besides the AJL, there were the Southern Junior League of which Crayford were members, Central Junior League and the Scottish Junior League. Here are some of the line-ups, as given, in ‘Speedway Mail’: ANGLIA JUNIOR LEAGUE Ipswich - Nightingale, Bloomfield, Davey. Rye House - Andrew Silver, Fitzpatrick, Hilton, Ott. Long Eaton - Cooper, Proctor, Spiers, May. Milton Keynes - Williamson, Piddock, Hunt, Wall. Leicester - Evans, Collins, Barker (or coukld be Baker?). Mildenhall - Parish, Farnham, Felgate. Boston - Chapman, Dunworth, Lee. Hackney - Chaplin, Rolls, Steward. KIng’s Lynn - Reid, Price, Green NOTE: No basic squads were available in this edition of ‘Speedway Mail’ for the Southern Junior League. I have no recollection (!!!!) of compiling this feature or for how long it may have appeared under my name in ‘Speedway Mail’. I would say that what appeared in ‘Speedway Mail’ could have been compiled from marked programmes as sent by track reporters covering the senior team results. I do not think that league administrators were forwarding this information. John Hyam.
