It’s a Wrap!
A 15 point maximum from Kyle Hughes tipped the balance in favour of the Restart Raiders, who signed off their City Gearboxes National League season on a high with a fine 47-43 victory at Stoke.
The win - The Raiders’ sixth on the road across all competitions in 2015 - guarantees them fifth place in the final League table, although they could still sneak fourth spot if Coventry slip up in their two remaining home matches which are scheduled as a double header for next Sunday.
While both Hughes and the Raiders had an element of luck on their side in Heat 13, when Lee Payne fell when leading on the last lap and duly handed the 2013 Potter and (guest) Ben Morley a 5-1, the team also deserve great credit for their late burst to secure the result after trailing by 8 points at Heat 10.
As it was, that Heat 13 outcome from Hughes and Morley levelled the score at 39-39, and the same pair made absolutely no mistake from the gate when matched against Payne and Danny Phillips in the nominated race.
As a delighted Rye House team manager John Sampford said afterwards, “Yes, we had a moment of luck in Heat 13, but it is fair to say that at the very least we would have taken a draw away from today.
“Our heat leaders gave us a real rock of stability: Kyle was superb, while Ben dropped his only point in Heat 1 and Luke (Priest) weighed in with two wins and a paid victory.
“The rest of the side did their bit too by chipping in with points to ensure a great end to the season.”
