LAKESIDE know nothing less than a win will do as they host Coventry at the Arena-Essex Raceway on Saturday (7.45). The Vortex Hammers are fighting to keep their play-off hopes alive as the struggling Bees visit Essex for a crucial encounter. A big away win for top four rivals Swindon at King’s Lynn on Thursday night has moved the Purfleet outfit down to fifth in the table. They missed out on the chance to hit back with an away win of their own as Friday’s meeting at Coventry was postponed due to rain. But they will now look to move back into the top four with another home victory – and Lewis Bridger is eyeing a dominant performance against his former club. Said Bridger: “We’re excited to be back at home on Saturday, and it hasn’t been too long since we rode at home so we shouldn’t have too many problems. “We’ll be looking for another dominant performance at home to get three points, and if we keep winning our home meetings we’ll be there or thereabouts.” The Vortex Hammers will be at full strength, whilst Coventry are without star No.1 Krzysztof Kasprzak due to the third round of the Speedway Euro Championship. With no facility permitted to cover his absence, they have drafted in former British Under 21 Champion Robert Branford to guest as a sub-6.00 Premier League rider allowed to take his place. Rider replacement will cover for Polish youngster Kacper Woryna, who is ruled out through a speedway injury. LAKESIDE: Andreas Jonsson, Edward Kennett, Richard Lawson, Lewis Bridger, Kim Nilsson, Robert Mear, Lewis Kerr. COVENTRY: Robert Branford, Jason Garrity, Danny King, Kacper Woryna R/R, Chris Harris, Josh Bates, James Sarjeant.

LAKESIDE moved back into the Elite League top four with a convincing 57-35 win over Coventry at the Arena-Essex Raceway. The Vortex Hammers put in a dominant display against an under-strength Bees side to keep their play-off hopes well and truly alive. Edward Kennett and Kim Nilsson both struck faultless paid maximums, whilst skipper Andreas Jonsson suffered his only defeat when he retired at the tapes in heat 11. Lewis Bridger also dropped just one point with an impressive showing as the Purfleet outfit sent out a message to their rivals with a powerful performance. They recorded 12 race wins and ran just four last places – and team coach Kelvin Tatum was delighted with a job well done. Said Tatum: “Coventry were depleted, but the most important job for us was to come away with the win and we did just that. “When we are at home at full strength we know we’re strong, and even though we made heavy weather of things initially by throwing some points away it was a pretty comfortable win. “With double figures coming from four riders, that shows the strength we have at home and in truth it could have been more if not for some bad luck for Richard Lawson and Lewis Kerr being hampered by illness. “The three points were vital, we needed that after Swindon picked up four points away last week, and it gets us back into the top four which is huge.” With Richard Lawson and Robert Mear also making solid contributions, it was a strong all-around team showing from the hosts. Reserve Lewis Kerr withdrew due to illness after struggling in his opening two rides, but the result was never in doubt on a confidence-boosting night for the Hammers. The win sees them leapfrog Wolverhampton to move back up to fourth in the table ahead of a huge encounter with the West Midlands side at Monmore Green on Monday (7.30). LAKESIDE 57: Kim Nilsson 12+3, Andreas Jonsson 12, Edward Kennett 11+1, Lewis Bridger 10+1, Robert Mear 6, Richard Lawson 5+1, Lewis Kerr 1+1. COVENTRY 35: Jason Garrity 11, Danny King 9, James Sarjeant 8, Ellis Perks 3+2, Chris Harris 3+1, Robert Branford 1+1, Kasper Woryna R/R.

LAKESIDE are gearing up for a huge showdown with Wolverhampton in their race for the Elite League play-offs on Monday (7.30). The Vortex Hammers leapfrogged Wolves to move back into the all-important top four with a convincing 57-35 win over Coventry on Saturday night. They will now aim to give their chances another major boost in a mouth-watering encounter at Monmore Green. The home side will be boosted by the return of World Champion Tai Woffinden – but Lakeside coach Kelvin Tatum is desperate to spoil his homecoming party. Despite their recent struggles on the road, he says they are heading to the West Midlands high on confidence and optimistic of adding to their points tally. Said Tatum: “Our away form hasn’t been as good as we would have liked, but everyone in the team is aware of how important these last few meetings are and I’d like to think they’ll raise their game accordingly. “Wolves will be boosted by Tai Woffinden coming back, but we have to go there and believe we can challenge. “We have several riders in excellent form at the moment, so I’d certainly like to think we can go there and push Wolves all the way.” Both sides will be at full strength, with Lakeside reserve Lewis Kerr shaking off the illness which caused him to pull out of Saturday’s meeting against Coventry. WOLVERHAMPTON: Fredrik Lindgren, Peter Karlsson, Tai Woffinden, Jacob Thorssell, Sam Masters, Max Clegg, Kyle Howarth. LAKESIDE: Andreas Jonsson, Edward Kennett, Richard Lawson, Lewis Bridger, Kim Nilsson, Robert Mear, Lewis Kerr.

LAKESIDE have reluctantly accepted they must return to Coventry this Friday after their clash at Brandon was rained off last week. Vortex Hammers co-promoter Jon Cook says they will head to the Midlands with a heavy heart after the club exhausted all possible options to re-arrange the fixture. They will be without No.1 Andreas Jonsson due to the Gorzow Grand Prix, whilst Richard Lawson is also riding for Premier League side Glasgow. Cook said: “Frankly we don't want to go short handed but such is world speedway nowadays that we had no dates open that allowed us a full team. Friday is the best of a bad lot. “The added complication of both me and Kelvin being unavailable has seen the promotion of Paul Hurry to join us as part of the team management. “The in-form Scott Nicholls will replace GP clashing AJ with rider replacement for Richard Lawson. I'm sure Scott and our five regulars will bring something back for us, a point might be enough in the play-off race as things stand.” The Vortex Hammers are in action at Wolverhampton tonight (Monday) and full reaction will follow after the meeting.

LAKESIDE fell agonisingly short of a consolation point as they went down 51-41 at Wolverhampton on Monday night. The Vortex Hammers put in a battling display at Monmore Green and trailed by just four points entering the final two races. But returning World Champion Tai Woffinden came up trumps for the home side in the final two races to ensure the Purfleet outfit suffered last-gasp heartache. It was an improved away performance from the Hammers with a number of impressive performances. Richard Lawson roared to two classy wins in his opening two rides before walking away from a horrific crash in heat 11. He admitted they were hugely frustrated to leave Monmore Green empty handed after a gutsy team effort. Said Lawson: “We were pretty gutted not to get a point. It’s come down to the last heat again and we’ve just fallen short. “A point tonight would have given us a good chance of making the play-offs, and we were really close. “We’ve got more chances at Coventry and King’s Lynn, so we just have to take the positives and look forward to those meetings now.” Skipper Andreas Jonsson top scored with 12 points, but he could only manage second place behind Woffinden when he took their tactical ride in heat 10. Swedish ace Kim Nilsson fought hard for his paid nine points, whilst Robert Mear bagged a solid 6+1 at reserve. Mear joined forces with lower order partner Lewis Kerr to strike a timely maximum in heat 12 as Kerr ended a night plagued with mechanical gremlins on a high. Edward Kennett chipped in with five points, but rider replacement accounted for just two points in place of Lewis Bridger after the late withdrawal of the British racer through illness. After slipping out of the Elite League top four, the Vortex Hammers will be back in action with a crucial encounter at Coventry on Friday (7.30). WOLVERHAMPTON 51: Tai Woffinden 13, Jacob Thorssell 9+1, Max Clegg 8+2, Sam Masters 6, Freddie Lindgren 5+1, Peter Karlsson 5+1, Kyle Howarth 5+1. LAKESIDE 41: Andreas Jonsson 12, Kim Nilsson 8+1, Richard Lawson 8, Robert Mear 6+1, Edward Kennett 5, Lewis Kerr 2+1, Lewis Bridger R/R.

LAKESIDE will head to Coventry looking to boost their play-off bid in their penultimate away meeting of the season on Friday (7.30). The Vortex Hammers know time is running out to pick up some more points on the road as they travel to Brandon for a vital clash. They will be without star skipper Andreas Jonsson due to the Gorzow Grand Prix of Poland, whilst Richard Lawson is riding for Premier League club Glasgow. Reserve Robert Mear is nonetheless keen to step up to the plate and help them add to their Elite League points tally. And he says the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a point at Wolverhampton on Monday will spur them on as they take on the Bees. Said Mear: “We were gutted to come so close to a point at Wolverhampton, and it was probably a worse feeling than getting annihilated away from home. “The play-offs is a big thing for any rider, it’s where we want to be so we have to pick up as many points as possible in our last few meetings. “It’s going to be tough going to Coventry without AJ and Richard (Lawson), but hopefully we can all do our bit and come away with something.” Former Coventry favourite Scott Nicholls will guest for Jonsson at No.1, whilst rider replacement will cover for Lawson at No.5. The home side will be without Chris Harris due to the Grand Prix, although wildcard Krzysztof Kasprzak will skip practice in order to ride for the Bees. COVENTRY: Krzysztof Kasprzak, Jason Garrity, Danny King, Kacper Woryna, Chris Harris R/R, Josh Bates, James Sarjeant. LAKESIDE: Scott Nicholls, Edward Kennett, Kim Nilsson, Lewis Bridger, Richard Lawson, Robert Mear, Lewis Kerr.

DEPLETED Lakeside suffered a 57-33 defeat against Coventry at Brandon on Friday night. The Vortex Hammers travelled to the Midlands without inspirational skipper Andreas Jonsson and Richard Lawson. They were unable to prevent a disappointing loss as they missed out on the chance to add to their Elite League points tally. It was a tough night for the Purfleet outfit leaving them on the back foot in their bid to reach the play-offs. Stand-in team boss Paul Hurry admitted his patched-up side were simply beaten by a better team on a night to forget. “We obviously didn’t have a full strength team so we were up against it to start with,” said Hurry. “All the boys did the best they could, so full credit to them for their efforts. A couple of them had some problems and struggled a little bit, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. “Coventry are full of confidence at home, they are on the crest of a wave and they got the job done. “It puts a bit more pressure on the King’s Lynn meetings next week, and we’ll be hoping the boys pull their fingers out.” Edward Kennett top scored for the visitors against his former club, notching 9+1 with a determined display. Guesting No.1 Scott Nicholls also added a creditable nine points, whilst Kim Nilsson ended a mixed night on a high with a heat 14 win. But British trio Lewis Bridger, Lewis Kerr and Robert Mear all fought hard for little reward as the struggling Bees emerged victorious. The Vortex Hammers will be back in action as they face two crucial clashes with King’s Lynn next week. They will head to the Adrian Flux Arena next Thursday (7.30) before hosting the return fixture at the Arena-Essex Raceway the very next night (8pm). COVENTRY 57: Josh Bates 14+2, Jason Garrity 13, Krzysztof Kasprzak 9+1, Danny King 9+1, James Sarjeant 7+1, Kacper Woryna 5+2, Chris Harris r/r. LAKESIDE 33: Edward Kennett 9+1, Scott Nicholls 9, Kim Nilsson 7, Lewis Bridger 3+1, Robert Mear 3+1, Lewis Kerr 2, Richard Lawson r/r. Elite League points: Coventry 3 Lakeside 0

LAKESIDE have moved squad member Ben Morley into their starting line-up for the remainder of the season. Morley, 22, comes into the Vortex Hammers side as a replacement for Robert Mear after he suffered a fractured shoulder blade in a grasstrack crash at the weekend. The popular youngster has made just one appearance for Lakeside this season but has put in some encouraging performances for Premier League side Rye House. Morley has developed a liking for the Arena-Essex Raceway circuit in the past – and co-promoter Jon Cook hopes he can make the most of his top flight opportunity in the closing weeks of the season. Said Cook: “Ben is hugely popular at the raceway, and he rides the track particularly well as we’ve seen in the past. “He’s been a member of a squad but only featured once, so we’re pleased to be able to give him an opportunity over rest of the season. “Obviously we wish Robert a speedy recovery, and in the meantime we hope Ben can step in and do a good job for us at reserve.” Morley and the Vortex Hammers will head to King’s Lynn for a crucial encounter on Thursday (7.30) before hosting the Stars at the Arena-Essex Raceway on Friday (8pm).

LAKESIDE are in last-chance saloon as they head to King’s Lynn for their final away meeting of the season on Thursday (7.30). The Vortex Hammers are desperate to keep their Elite League play-off hopes alive with a positive result at the Adrian Flux Arena. A win for fourth placed Swindon at home to Leicester could end their chances if they fail to leave Norfolk with any points. Team coach Kelvin Tatum knows his side need to step things up – and he says they are targeting a victory which would give their top four hopes a huge boost. “We need to come away with a result,” said Tatum. “We’ve been given a bit of an opportunity with Swindon not picking up any points at Wolverhampton on Monday, and we need to take advantage. “We’re getting close to the last throw of the dice, and King’s Lynn weren’t particularly impressive on Monday either so we’ll be hoping to make the most of that. “We must get something, but a win would be terrific and with the home meeting on Friday plus the showdown with Swindon in a couple of weeks it would give us a good chance. “If we don’t get anything tomorrow night then we possibly don’t deserve to make the play-offs, but it’s in our own hands and it’s down to us to perform.” The Hammers draft in British Champion Danny King to guest for Kim Nilsson, who is riding in Sweden, at No.3. They also include Dan Halsey at reserve in place of the injured Robert Mear with Ben Morley already committed to a meeting for Premier League club Rye House. King’s Lynn include James Sarjeant as a guest for Simon Lambert at reserve, whilst Danish ace Nicklas Porsing makes his return after replacing Rory Schlein. KING’S LYNN: Niels-Kristian Iversen, Nicklas Porsing, Robert Lambert, Kai Huckenbeck, Troy Batchelor, James Sarjeant, Carl Wilkinson. LAKESIDE: Andreas Jonsson, Edward Kennett, Danny King, Lewis Bridger, Richard Lawson, Dan Halsey, Lewis Kerr.

LAKESIDE kept their play-off hopes alive as they snatched a last gasp consolation Elite League point from a 48-42 defeat at King's Lynn. The Vortex Hammers looked set to have their season come to a premature end, but heat 15 heroics from captain Andreas Jonsson saved the day for the Purfleet club. It means the Hammers head into Friday's home meeting against the Stars knowing another win is a must to keep the pressure on fellow fourth placed Swindon. And club coach Kelvin Tatum is confident his side can do just that after being encouraged by a rare point on the road. Said Tatum: "After giving King's Lynn a head start, we battled back really well. "We got ourselves in front with a 5-1 in heat ten and then came the interval. "The track changed a little bit after that and we just couldn't get enough back to get the win. "For the first two laps of heat 15, King's Lynn were sitting on a 5-1 and our season was over. "But Andreas (Jonsson) played a true captain's role and he rode like his life depended on it to force his way through for a vital second place. "We've got the minimum of what we came for and it could be a vital consolation point. "However, we seriously could have got all four points here tonight because we were in some really good positions at times and just didn't hold on. "But I can't fault the effort of the team; they knew what was at stake tonight and their performance on track showed that. "Now we move onto tomorrow's home meeting against the Stars and we know three points are an absolute must." Reserve Lewis Kerr top scored for the Hammers as he bagged three crucial race wins against his former club. Skipper Andreas Jonsson picked up five second places, including a hard fought heat 15 to ultimately claim the all important point for the Hammers. Edward Kennett recovered from a last place in his opening ride to reel off three straight wins while guest Danny King scored eight points for his efforts. While Lewis Bridger, Richard Lawson and guest reserve Danny Halsey all had below par nights, their points proved vital in keeping Lakeside's play-off hopes alive. A full meeting preview will be issued on Friday morning ahead of the home clash against King's Lynn. KING’S LYNN 48: Niels-Kristian Iversen 12, Nicklas Porsing 9+1, Kai Huckenbeck 9, Robert Lambert 8, Carl Wilkinson 5, James Sarjeant 4+3, Troy Batchelor 1. LAKESIDE host King's Lynn at the Arena Essex Raceway tonight in a must win meeting for the Hammers (8.00). The Purfleet club went down 48-42 at the Adrian Flux Arena on Thursday - but a rare consolation point on their travels kept their play-off hopes alive. The Vortex Hammers are looking to continue their dominant home form which has seen them lose just once on home shale in 2016. Club coach Kelvin Tatum said: "The effort from the team on Thursday could not be questioned at all and you could see that they're desperate to make the play-offs. "We know that nothing else but three points will be acceptable from tonight's meeting and if we can do that then it gives us real hope. "A win would mean Swindon would have to go to Belle Vue in a few weeks time and get a point, otherwise it would all rest on the big showdown between the two of us on September 16." Lakeside are at full strength for tonight's clash with Kim Nilsson back after fulfilling Swedish League duties on Thursday while Ben Morley makes his first appearance of the season since signing in place of injured reserve Robert Mear earlier this week. King's Lynn will operate rider replacement for British sensation Robert Lambert, who is competing in the Grand Prix Challenge this weekend, while Robert Branford is drafted in as a guest at reserve for the injured Lewis Rose. LAKESIDE: Andreas Jonsson, Edward Kennett, Richard Lawson, Lewis Bridger, Kim Nilsson, Ben Morley, Lewis Kerr. LAKESIDE capped off an excellent two days with a vital 60-32 win over King’s Lynn at the Arena-Essex Raceway. Just 24 hours after keeping their Elite League play-off hopes alive with a consolation point at the Adrian Flux Arena, the Vortex Hammers avoided any slip-ups with a comprehensive home win. It was a dominant performance from the Purfleet outfit to comfortably claim three points and keep their top four bid on track. They will now watch on anxiously as Swindon head to Belle Vue on Wednesday, September 14. If the Robins leave Manchester empty handed it will set up a mouth-watering showdown at Purfleet on Friday, September 16 which could see the Hammers snatch fourth spot. Lakeside coach Kelvin Tatum was pleased to see his side put in a professional performance in their penultimate fixture to keep the pressure piled on Swindon. Said Tatum: “King’s Lynn were depleted, and they were second best this evening but we had a job to do and we went about it very professionally. “It was a good performance, and we’ve managed to put the pressure back on Swindon over the last two days. “It’s all looking very tight and Swindon still have a chance to get a point at Belle Vue. We just have to hope that the Aces win by seven points or more and we’ll be all set up for a showdown with Swindon here at Lakeside in a fortnight’s time.” Edward Kennett roared to a faultless, four-ride paid maximum for the hosts whilst Andreas Jonsson, Lewis Bridger, Lewis Kerr and Ben Morley also suffered just one defeat apiece. Reserve Morley enjoyed a superb return to the side, striking four paid wins in his opening four rides before missing out on a paid maximum with a fall in heat 15. Swedish star Kim Nilsson also notched double figures whilst Richard Lawson put in a solid showing as the hosts recorded 11 race wins and ran just two last places. LAKESIDE 60: Edward Kennett 11+1, Kim Nilsson 11, Lewis Kerr 10, Ben Morley 8+4, Lewis Bridger 8+1, Andreas Jonsson 7+2, Richard Lawson 5+2. KING’S LYNN 32: Niels-Kristian Iversen 12+2, Troy Batchelor 10, Michael Palm Toft 3, Kai Huckenbeck 3, Carl Wilkinson 3, Rob Branford 1, Robert Lambert r/r. LAKESIDE’S Grand Prix star Andreas Jonsson will miss the rest of the season after a horrifying crash in Sweden on Tuesday. The Vortex Hammers No.1, who was a last heat hero in picking up a valuable away point at King’s Lynn last week, has suffered a broken collarbone, thumb and ribs when racing in the Swedish play-offs. It means the club will need to find a guest replacement for next Friday’s vital showdown with Swindon at the Arena-Essex track. Club chief Jon Cook said: "I spoke to AJ first thing this morning and of course it's a massive blow to our hopes. “However, given the rather sketchy reports initially coming out of Sweden with regard to a back injury, it's a relief that although he's in great pain at the moment all his injuries will heal. “I know it's been a worrying night for all concerned and the main thing is that he's going to be ok, the effect on track is something I will sit down and discuss with Kelvin Tatum (club coach) and our senior riders later.” Everyone at Lakeside Vortex Hammers Speedway would like to wish Andreas all the very best and thank him for his sterling work t

LAKESIDE have booked seven-time British Champion Scott Nicholls as a guest for their crucial clash with Swindon at the Arena-Essex Raceway on Friday (8pm). The Vortex Hammers are hoping to be in a position to snatch a top four spot with a win over the Robins in their final fixture of the regular season. They need the fourth-placed Wiltshire outfit to leave Belle Vue empty handed on Wednesday in order to keep their hopes alive heading into Friday’s meeting. Aces man Nicholls has been drafted in to cover for injured skipper Andreas Jonsson at No.1 as they look to extend their season. Co-promoter Jon Cook has confirmed Jonsson’s British season is over despite reports on speedwaygp.com suggesting he will ride in the Swedish Grand Prix on September 24. The club are also looking at the possibility of bringing in a rider under the seven-day emergency play-off transfer window, which opens on Wednesday, should they reach the play-offs. Cook said: “We are keeping options open at this point as it’s still a big if with regards to us getting into the play-offs. “We have a plan and hopefully come Friday evening we will be in a position to bring it into action. “We’re a tad annoyed by a reference on the SGP website saying we claimed AJ was out for the season when we did nothing other than report what he told us. “It's great that he's trying to be fit for a home Grand Prix, and I’m sure they'll want him there as he no doubt sells tickets. “However, as far as his UK season is concerned his mechanic has already returned his chassis' to his sponsor and engines to his tuner along with his race kit.”
