LAKESIDE Hammers have made a double swoop as the tapes go up on team building for an exciting new era at the club. George Hunter has made the switch from Rye House and he will be joined by Mildenhall star Alfie Bowtell. Hunter will start on a 4-point average with Bowtell on 4.21 and more names are set to follow after the National League AGM which Hammers chiefs are attending on Tuesday. They are expected to be one of two new applicants to join the league with Plymouth Devils also hoping to continue at that level. Hammers promoter Jon Cook said: “We’re pleased to make a start with George and Alfie, they are two riders we feel can improve their average. “There has been no shortage of riders calling us which is extremely flattering. “And for us to have the experience and knowledge of Kelvin Tatum, who spent a glittering career at the very top of the sport, on board is excellent and the youngsters will learn so much from working with him.” Meanwhile new-boy Hunter said: “Lakeside is a big club with a good reputation and I’m excited about joining them. I’m looking forward to the new season already.”

LAKESIDE Hammers are delighted to confirm Ben Morley and Zach Wajtknecht as their top two who will lead their National League side in 2017. The pairing join Alfie Bowtell and George Hunter in the Hammers line-up with four of the seven team spots now in place. Morley, 22, is no stranger to the Arena Essex Raceway after spells in 2014 and 2016 in the Elite League with the Hammers and has enjoyed plenty of success at NL - he won the National League Riders' Championship only last year. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Wajtknecht already has three British League Gold medals to his name, despite only being on the shale for two seasons. Club coach Kelvin Tatum said: "Ben and Zach are two solid performers at this level and we feel they'll provide plenty of points from the top. "Ben knows the Lakeside track well, he's an exciting rider and he's already a firm favourite amongst supporters as well so he should prove to be a popular signing. "He's still young, but he has a vast amount of crucial experience at all levels and that could benefit the whole team. "He's what I'd describe as a consistent, big hitting heat-leader in the National League and we're predicting big things for Ben in the Lakeside race jacket in 2017. "Zach already has some significant honours and achievements next to his name and that means he's already got a winning mentality drilled into him. "He was part of Somerset's Premier League winning side last year and we'll be hoping he makes it a hat-trick of National League titles too after back-to-back successes with Birmingham. "He's a Lakeside asset, which makes us even more chuffed to be able to include him, and the amount of potential he's got as well really excites us too and I think the fans will take to him pretty quickly. "We're delighted with how the team is shaping up so far and we're already counting down to the new season for what is an exciting new adventure for the Hammers."

LAKESIDE HAMMERS PRESS RELEASE :::::::::: LAKESIDE’S 2017 team is taking shape after they snapped up David Mason and Nick Laurence ahead of the new National League season. The Vortex Hammers are preparing for an exciting new era after making the switch to the third tier and have bolstered their talented side with two experienced performers. Mason, 40, holds the National League track record at the Arena-Essex Raceway and joins on a 6.54 average after spending last season with Kent. Meanwhile, 26-year-old Laurence will slot in at reserve on a 3.00 average following some impressive appearances for Eastbourne last season. Team boss Kelvin Tatum is pleased to welcome two more new additions to their side alongside Zach Wajtknecht, Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell and George Hunter. Said Tatum: “David Mason is an experienced rider, and he fitted very nicely into the third heat-leader slot for us. “We’re pleased to have him and I think he’ll be very valuable. He’s a reliable scorer, but I think he’ll also have a positive impact on the younger riders off the track. “Nick is a bit of an unknown quantity to a lot of people. He’s been in and out of the sport but he’s very excited to have a team place with the Hammers and I think he could surprise a few people. “At this level especially, teams are always looking for riders who can come in on a low average and increase it significantly and I think Nick could do just that. “The team is shaping up quite nicely. We have some people in mind for the final place, and myself and Jon Cook will keep monitoring things before making a decision. “We’re very happy with the six riders we’ve signed, and now the New Year has arrived we’re looking forward to the season getting underway.” The club are pushing ahead with plans for the new season and will be holding a fans night at the end of this month on a date to be confirmed shortly.

From the SGB website: :::::: LEIGH Lanham has announced his retirement from racing after over two decades in the sport.
39-year-old Lanham made his senior debut for Ipswich back in 1993 and was associated for the majority of his career with the Witches and Lakeside. His final season in 2016 was spent with Rye House.
Lanham said: “I feel the timing is right. I’ve been very lucky to do something I’ve loved doing for the last 23 years.
“I really can’t believe it’s been so long, I’ve got some great memories over the years, I’ve been lucky to race for some great clubs and met so many decent people along the way from fellow riders to supporters, it’s been brilliant.
“I’m also so lucky to have had some awesome sponsors which helped me to have good kit. I want to say thanks so much to all of them.”
