Panthers v Hammers: Meeting Report
Lakeside took the advantage in their Championship play-off semi-final with a terrific 46-44 win at Peterborough on Sunday.
The Hammers’ fifth visit to the East of England Arena this season turned out to be the best as they turned around an early six-point deficit, and they now lead ahead of next Sunday’s second leg at Hoddesdon.
In a highly entertaining meeting, Adam Ellis pulled off three successive wins in the middle of the contest and there were also vital successes for Nick Morris and Ben Morley amongst a hard-working team display.
Hammers had to wait until Heat 5 for a race win, with home reserve Simon Lambert producing an inspired display to help the Panthers into an early lead.
Lambert won the first two races, edging out Morley in a classic Heat 2 battle, and then partnered Michael Palm Toft to maximum points in an awarded Heat 4 when Morris crashed on the second lap.
But the visitors got into their stride with an excellent Richard Lawson/Zach Wajtknecht 5-1 over Ulrich Ostergaard in Heat 5, and after Morris had rounded Lambert on the final bend in the next, Ellis and Kyle Newman banged in a match-levelling maximum over Palm Toft in Heat 7.
On-the-line decisions continued to go against the Hammers with Lambert holding on from Wajtknecht to complete a 5-1 in Heat 8, and Newman’s late charge on Steve Worrall in Heat 10 also proving unsuccessful.
But in between, Morris was a dominant winner of Heat 9 and Morley collected third place from Emil Grondal to cut the gap back two.
Lawson was overhauled by Palm Toft in Heat 11 as the Panthers edged a 4-2 but the Hammers kept on fighting with three 4-2s in the next three races – Heat 13 providing plenty of thrills as Morris came from last to first with a super outside blast, whilst Lawson re-passed Palm Toft for third.
That levelled the scores, and Morley then conjured a flying start to Heat 14 to hold Lambert at bay with Newman supplying the all-important third place to put the visitors ahead.
And although Morris’s considerable efforts weren’t enough to remove Palm Toft from the lead in Heat 15, Ellis kept Worrall at the back to ensure a narrow advantage for the Hammers at half-time in the tie.
Manager Will Pottinger said: “There wasn’t a lot between the teams throughout, but we really came into it in the second half of the meeting when we found our set-ups.
“You want your riders to do it when it really matters, so that’s really pleasing. We know how good Ben can be, and he made a great start in Heat 14 and rode a really good race.
“We fought hard for every point and there was a good team spirit as well with us being back at full strength, so things are going in the right direction and now we want to push on and finish the season strongly.
“We’ve got a couple of points’ advantage, but we’ll still view the second leg in the same way, that it’s 0-0, because Peterborough have good riders who can go well at Rye House, and we don’t have much home track advantage.
We certainly won’t take it lightly as I’m sure they will put out the strongest team they can.
“So psychologically it’s good for us but we’ve got to finish the job off next Sunday – and it’s nice finally be leaving here with a win after our fifth visit this season!”
Peterborough Panthers 44:
Simon Lambert 16+1, Michael Palm Toft 9+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 9, Steve Worrall 6+1, Jordan Stewart 4, Emil Grondal 0, Bradley Wilson-Dean r/r.
Lakeside Hammers 46:
Adam Ellis 12+1, Nick Morris 10, Richard Lawson 7+1, Ben Morley 7, Zach Wajtknecht 5+1, Kyle Newman 4+2, Alfie Bowtell 1.

Play-Off Semi-Final 2nd Leg Meeting Preview
Lakeside can book their place in the Championship Play-Off Final on Sunday - but club promoter Jon Cook insists there’s still plenty of work to be done.
The Hammers hold a two-point advantage ahead of Sunday’s decider against Peterborough at Rye House (2pm start) courtesy of their impressive 46-44 first leg semi-final win at Alwalton last weekend.
It’s been a dramatic week for the Hammers’ opponents after the Panthers were put up for sale earlier this week.
And while Cook is desperate to see his side beat Peterborough this weekend, he hopes a solution can be found for the East of England Arena outfit with the sport’s winter break fast approaching.
Said Cook: “I was shocked and saddened to see Ged Rathbone’s comments that Peterborough’s home clash with Scunthorpe on Saturday could be their last at the old Showground.
“Hopefully that's not the case and Sunday won't be the last time we see them on track.
“We've staged one farewell too many this season but as much as we hope they are saved long term, we intend to end their Championship season Sunday!
“To make the Final will be a massive achievement against the backdrop of everything that's been thrown at us off track all year but Will (Pottinger - team manager) and the boys will be anything but complacent.
“But we’re such a dangerous side when we’re at full strength; a win or draw and we’re in and that's the sole focus."
There will be six junior heats prior to the main event which will commence around 1.20pm.
Lakeside Hammers:
Richard Lawson, Zach Wajtknecht, Adam Ellis, Kyle Newman, Nick Morris, Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell.
Peterborough Panthers:
Jason Garrity, Emil Grondal, Bradley Wilson-Dean, Tero Aarnio, Ulrich Ostergaard, Carl Wilkinson, Simon Lambert.

Hammers v Comets - Championship Shield 1st Leg Preview
Lakeside Hammers are gearing up for a massive weekend as their drama-filled season gears up for a spectacular conclusion.
Hammers face no less than FOUR meetings in three days – placing plenty of demand on man and machine.
They are looking for Championship Shield glory when they host Workington in the first leg of the final at Rye House on Friday (8pm).
The return is in Cumbria the following night (6.30pm) and is followed immediately by the outstanding league match between the sides as the second part of a double header.
And on Sunday Will Pottinger’s men are back at Rye House for their Play-off Semi-Final second leg against Peterborough, starting with a two-point lead. The meeting starts at 6pm.
Said Pottinger: “As weekends go, they don’t get much bigger than this! We’re still battling away in the major competitions and we have the chance to win a major honour against Workington.
“But we also have a job to do against Peterborough on Sunday, just because we hold a two-point lead from the first leg we won’t be taking our foot off the gas, far from it. There will be no complacency from my team.
“We need the support of all the fans, both Hammers and Rye House, on Friday night. I want to see us take a useful lead up to Workington on Saturday.”
Friday’s Teams:
Lakeside Hammers:
Richard Lawson, Zach Wajtknecht, Adam Ellis, Kyle Newman, Nick Morris, Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell.
Workington Comets:
Bach, Dan Belwey R/R, Nicolai Klindt, Rasmus Jensen, Ty Proctor, Kyle Bickley, Mason Campton.
Gates open at 6.30pm. 6 heats of junior racing are also planned ahead of the main event.

Hammers v Comets - Championship Shield 1st Leg Meeting Report Lakeside suffered a narrow 44-46 defeat against Workington in the first leg of the Championship Shield Final at Hoddesdon.
The Hammers provided a majority of heat winners but were unable to convert them into sufficient race advantages until the closing stages as the Comets took their chances when they arose.
That was despite the visitors, already using rider-replacement for Dan Bewley, being reduced to five riders when skipper Ty Proctor crashed out in Heat 6.
But with reserve Mason Campton taking seven rides and scoring every time, and experienced Dane Nicolai Klindt producing a series of trademark fast starts, the Comets still had enough to hold the advantage at the halfway stage of the tie.
For the Hammers, Nick Morris was immense with 14 points and Richard Lawson only missed out once in five rides, with the pair combining for key 5-1s in Heats 13 and 15 to reduce an imposing eight-point deficit to just two, giving the Hammers a chance in Satuday’s second leg.
The opening four races were all shared although both Kyle Newman and Alfie Bowtell hit the deck in the early stages of the meeting, with all three Hammers heat-leaders winning their opening rides.
But a shock 5-1 from Klindt and Rene Bach in Heat 5 put the visitors ahead, although the Hammers hit straight back through Lawson and Zach Wajtknecht in the re-run of Heat 6 after Proctor’s crash.
Morris worked hard to split Rasmus Jensen and Klindt in a Comets’ 4-2 in Heat 7 and Lakeside’s hopes of levelling matters two races later were dented when Newman suffered mechanical trouble at the start.
Then Klindt and Jensen out-trapped Lawson for a costly 5-1 in Heat 10, and Ben Morley came to grief in Heat 11 leaving Morris to win for a 3-3.
The Comets went eight-up in a disastrous Heat 12 when Adam Ellis was disqualified for breaking the tapes, with Bowtell falling again in the re-run, but Morris and Lawson gave the home side renewed hope with a 5-1 in Heat 13.
Workington, however, secured their first leg win when Campton and Jensen secured a 4-2 in Heat 14, split by Morley, before another super 5-1 from Morris and Lawson in the final race at least pulled the gap back to two points.
Lakeside Hammers 44:
Nick Morris 13+1, Richard Lawson 11+2, Zach Wajtknecht 6, Adam Ellis 6, Ben Morley 6, Alfie Bowtell 1+1, Kyle Newman 1.
Workington Comets 46:
Nicolai Klindt 13+1, Mason Campton 12+3, Rasmus Jensen 10+2, Rene Bach 8, Kyle Bickley 2+1, Ty Proctor 1+1, Dan Bewley r/r.

Comets v Hammers Championship Shield 2nd Leg Preview
Lakeside’s busy weekend continues when they make the long trip north for a double-header at Workington tonight (6.30pm).
The Hammers first have to pull back a two-point deficit if they are to secure silverware in the Championship Shield, following their defeat on Friday at Hoddesdon.
And the teams will meet again immediately after in the one remaining Championship fixture required to complete this season’s league table.
The match is a re-staging as the initial encounter in August had to be abandoned following the horrific Heat 3 crash which ended the season for the Comets’ Dan Bewley and also meant Kyle Newman had time out for the Hammers.
Second place in the final standings is up for grabs as the winners will overhaul Glasgow, and a superior points difference means a draw would be enough for the Hammers to move above their hosts and the Tigers.
But that will be far from easy as the Comets boast a 100 per cent home record in the Championship – although three visiting sides did return from Derwent Park with a league point to show for their efforts, and both Berwick and Glasgow managed draws in the group stages of the Shield, which made the Comets’ progression to the Final all the more remarkable.
Lakeside are at full strength whilst Workington are set to be without Ty Proctor due to the hand injury he picked up in the first leg.
Hammers boss Will Pottinger said: “It was a tough night on Friday but thanks to the fans for their support.
“We now face the long trip to Workington and I’m certain the boys will give it their all. There’s lots to go for over this weekend and we’re determined to achieve as much as possible.
“There’s a real determination in the camp and we need to show some character now.”
Workington Comets:
Rene Bach, Dan Bewley R/R, Nicolai Klindt, Rasmus Jensen, Guest TBC, Kyle Bickley, Mason Campton.
Lakeside Hammers:
Richard Lawson, Zach Wajtknecht, Adam Ellis, Kyle Newman, Nick Morris, Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell
