Bank Holiday Boost or Blow? Rye House 56 Berwick 36 (Premier League; Monday, August 26th 2013) The Silver Ski Rockets achieved just the result they were looking for in preparation for Saturday’s season-defining Knock-Out Cup Semi-Final, with this emphatic 20 point victory over the Bandits also erasing any memories of their troubled performance at Edinburgh just three days earlier. But if the result was a much needed boost, the question now is whether Jason Bunyan will be able to take his place in Saturday’s showdown. The Rye House captain suffered a possible broken thumb after falling in Heat 9 and being hit by oncoming partner Kasper Lykke, who did his best to take evasive action by laying his machinery down but still collected his team-mate. Bunyan’s injury aside, this was a highly positive performance from the Rockets, as the Hertfordshire side made light of Jason Garrity’s continued absence by rattling off no less than twelve race wins, six 5-1s and three 4-2s. Bunyan aside, all of the team were paid for at least 7, with Lykke and Anders Mellgren jointly leading the way with paid 13 apiece, and even young reserve guest Oliver Greenwood getting in on the act with an impressive 5+2. Rye admittedly had a little luck on their side early on, as comfortable Heat 1 “winner” Sebastian Alden was subsequently disqualified for not using a dirt deflector and Nicki Barrett dropped out of the following race when also in the lead. Those two instances aside, the Rockets pretty much dictated their own early fortune as they built up a 23-7 advantage by Heat 5. A 7-1 flurry from Barrett and the Tactically nominated David Bellego in Heat 8 gave the Bandits brief hope of salvaging a match point, at 30-20, only for Rye to push forward again with a 5-1 from Olly Allen and Pontus Aspgren two races later. Any lingering ambitions the visitors may have held were ended when Barrett fell while on a 5-1 with Robin Aspegren in Heat 12 and Lykke and Greenwood quickly mopped up the opportunity by taking maximum points in the re-run to stretch the score to 45-29. Two of the remaining three races were shared, with Tyson Nelson and Kykke popping in one final 5-1 for the Rockets in-between, in Heat 14. Rye House scorers: Anders Mellgren 13, Kasper Lykke 12+1, Olly Allen 8+2, Tyson Nelson 8+1, Pontus Aspgren 6+1, Oliver Greenwood 5+2, Jason Bunyan 4. Berwick scorers: Kozza Smith 10, David Bellego 9+2, Nicki Barrett 5+1, Seb Alden 3, Robin Aspegren 3, Matthew Wethers 3, Liam Carr 3. Match Points: Rye House 3 Berwick 0 Footnote: The club’s annual Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund collection raised over £1400. Our grateful thanks to all who contributed to this magnificent total. Bickley Wins 125cc Final British 125cc Final (kindly sponsored by Wessex Marine) (Rye House; Monday, August 26th 2013) 1st Kyle Bickley 2nd Tom Brennan 3rd Leon Flint 4th Sam Stead White-hot pre-meeting favourite Kyle Bickley duly delivered the good to collect the British 125cc Championship in the event that followed the Rockets-Berwick match, but only after being pushed to the limit by his rivals. The young Cumbrian had won all five of the 125cc support classes previously staged this year as part of the British Youth series – including the second round at Rye House in May – and duly went through the card here. Twice in his qualifying races, though, he had to come from the back, while the Grand Final itself proved just that as an epic sign-off to the event, with riders trading places throughout the four laps. Ultimately, however, the chequered flag rose and fell on Bickley, who took the title ahead of 2012 winner Tom Brennan, with Leon Flint third. Jolyon West was the event’s “Mr Unlucky”, scoring 5 points in two completed rides but suffering from mechanical problems at the starting gate in his other two. A month on from suffering a dislocated left shoulder, Rye House mascot Macauley Leek finished on 4 points. Scorers (top four to Grand Final): Kyle Bickley 12, Sam Stead 10, Tom Brennan 8, Leon Flint 8 (qualified for Grand Final), Kai Hubbard 8, Kieran Douglas 6, Jolyon West 5, Henry Atkins 4, Macauley Leek 4, Harry McGurk 4, Harry Jones 2, Jordan Jenkins 1 Grand Final: Kyle Bickley, Tom Brennan, Leon Flint, Sam Stead

Preview: Rye House vs Scunthorpe (PL) and Redcar (KOC) The 2013 Speedway season reaches the end of August with Saturday’s double header staging at Rye House. First on track will be the Silver Ski Rockets’ Premier League encounter with Scunthorpe. The reigning League Champions have found the defence of their crown a difficult one… although last week’s successive away wins at Sheffield and Plymouth have given the Scorpions sudden hope of making the title Play-Offs. Their team includes Cardiff Grand Prix reserve Josh Auty, 2010 World Cup Silver medallist Nicolai Klindt and back-to-back Scunthorpe rider of the year Thomas Jorgensen, who also impressed Rye fans with a 13 point haul at the Hertfordshire circuit just three weeks ago. Rye House team manager John Sampford recognises the threat at hand. “The Scorpions are very much the in-form team of the last two weeks, and have a lot riding on this match, so we will have to be at the top of our form to get the right result. As I’ve said before, you get nothing for nothing in this league; you have to fight for every point. “I’ve spoken to Jason Bunyan, who has confirmed that he will be fit to ride on Saturday after his crash against Berwick. It shows his grit and determination; he is such a rock to this team. “Jason Garrity remains questionable for Saturday. If he is unable to take his place, we have Ben Morley standing by for both matches. Ben has produced some excellent – and critical – displays for us already this season, so we have plenty of potential cover there.” The Premier League clash will be followed by what has now become the defining moment in the Silver Ski Rockets’ 2013 season. Despite a seemingly relentless run of injury and misfortune – the club’s badge of “Generation Next” has often segued into one of “Generation Hexed” - the Rockets are still in there fighting in the Knock-Out Cup, and Saturday brings the moment of truth: the Semi-Final second leg against Redcar. Redcar 48 Rye House 42 was the score-line from July 11th’s first leg on Teesside, which makes Saturday’s target totally black and white. With the exclusion of the Tactical Ride rule from the competition, there is no grey area in this one…. 49 is the magic number. While much of the ground work has been laid in the first leg, the Rockets can take absolutely nothing for granted against a Bears team whose own Cup future is at stake, and which has started a fair few of its opponents so far this year. 22 year old Australian Micky Dyer has been a revelation in only his second season of Premier League racing, with fellow Aussie Aaron Summers and Ulrich Ostergaard tucked in behind him. Third year Bear Matej Kus is actually at No.1, with his absence for the fixture covered by Thomas Jorgensen, who will therefore see double duty on Saturday, as a guest. As Sampford reiterates, “The bottom line is that this is our most important match of the year. There is just so much riding on it. “We achieved a very good result in the first leg, but now we’ve got to complete the job. We know our potential when we are firing on all cylinders: now we’ve got to go out and deliver on that.” And, as he concedes, “Yes, 49 is the magic number.” Teams (alphabetical order): Rye House: Olly Allen, Pontus Aspgren, Jason Bunyan, Jason Garrity (if fit), Kasper Lykke, Anders Mellgren, Tyson Nelson Scunthorpe: Josh Auty, Ashley Birks, Lewis Blackbird, Ryan Douglas, David Howe R/R, Thomas Jorgensen, Nicolai Klindt Redcar: Micky Dyer, Thomas Jorgensen, Ulrich Ostergaard, Hugh Skidmore, Aaron Summers, Carl Wilkinson, Steve Worrall Supporters are reminded that Saturday’s meeting will start one hour earlier than normal – at 6pm – in order to accommodate the scheduled thirty race programme. Admission prices are: Adults £20, Seniors £18, Teenagers £8, U-12s FREE. New Date for Berwick Away The Silver Ski Rockets have re-scheduled last weekend’s wash-out at Berwick for Saturday, September 21st, although there will still be Speedway at Rye House that night as the Hoddesdon track hosts the annual National League Riders’ Championship. Amazingly, and despite the occasional very wet weather that has been felt this summer, last Saturday’s rain-off – the Rockets’ last scheduled away League fixture this season - was their first to suffer a postponement, and also the first Bandits’ home League match to suffer the same fate! Paradise Wildlife Park to Sponsor NLRC It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Paradise Wildlife Park will once again be the main sponsor for the National League Riders' Championship due to be staged at Rye House on Saturday September 21st. Rye House promoter Len Silver was both delighted and grateful for the confirmation. “The continued support of Park director, Pete Sampson, himself an ex-rider well known at Rye House, is very much appreciated by everyone involved at the Hertfordshire track. It will be an opportunity to remind visiting fans that the Speedway Museum is a big attraction at Paradise Wildlife Park which is situated near Cheshunt, only about 5 miles from Rye House. Exhibits are continuously being up-dated and there is even a section devoted to Cycle Speedway.”

Rockets Sneak Past Scorpions Rye House 50 Scunthorpe 40 (Premier League; Saturday, August 31st 2013) The Silver Ski Rockets ultimately stole all three match points in a tense, tight fixture that had clear implications beyond its immediate fifteen heats. The result ended the defending League Champions’ last ditch efforts to make the Play-Offs, while mathematically keeping the Rockets’ own hopes faintly alive, at least for the next 24 hours. Much closer to home, however, it also impacted on the second half of the night’s double header, with injuries to the Rockets’ Pontus Aspgren and Scunthorpe’s Thomas Jorgensen – earmarked as a guest by Redcar – ruling both out of the Cup tie which followed. Jorgensen’s withdrawal with lower back bruising followed a third bend fall in Heat 3, while Aspgren bravely soldiered through a further outing after his own Heat 8 tumble before being ruled out. That further outing came in Heat 10, when the Swede partnered Olly Allen to a critical 5-1 over visiting guest Hugh Skidmore and Ashley Birks that gave Rye the lead at 31-29, and effectively ignited their final push for points. Anders Mellgren quickly followed up by winning Heat 11, with Kasper Lykke’s third lap pass of Ryan Douglas for third place enhancing the Rockets’ lead to 35-31. Mellgren also featured in the two clinchers, maxing out with Allen against Lewis Blackbird and Josh Auty in Heat 13, and then producing the same result with the same partner when pitted against Ashley Birks and Hugh Skidmore in the finale. Indeed, the pair provided Rye with its main scoring spearhead. Mellgren was headed only by Ashley Birks in Heat 7, while Allen dropped his only points when kept at the back in a difficult Heat 1. With Aspgren unbeaten in completed races and Ben Morley solid with 6+1, the Rockets had just enough in the tank to deny a brave Scunthorpe side that soldiered on despite the early loss of Jorgensen, thanks in no small part to three race wins from Ashley Birks and an exciting sting in the tail courtesy of freshman Ryan Douglas (10+1). Rye House team manager John Sampford admitted afterwards that “It was almost a war of attrition, with a series of falls and stoppages. We managed to pull it out of the fire in the last six races, but it was tight for much of the match and a pretty gruelling encounter. “Pontus lifted coming out of the second bend in Heat 8, and came down heavily. We think he’s either jarred his back or damaged his coccyx, but he has gone to hospital for a precautionary x-ray just to be safe.” Rye House scorers: Anders Mellgren 13+1, Olly Allen 11, Pontus Aspgren 7+2, Ben Morley (guest) 6+1, Tyson Nelson 6, Jason Bunyan 5, Kasper Lykke 2+1
Scunthorpe scorers: Ashley Birks 12, Ryan Douglas 11+1, Lewis Blackbird 8+1, Josh Auty 7+2, Hugh Skidmore (guest) 2, Thomas Jorgensen 0, David Howe R/R Match Points: Rye House 3 Scunthorpe 0 Rockets Reach Cup Final! Rye House 55 Redcar 35 (agg:) 97-83) (Knock-Out Cup Semi-Final Despite enduring an injury-racked 2013, the Silver Ski Rockets will get a final shot at silverware courtesy of the Knock-Out Cup. The Rockets made light of the loss of Pontus Aspgren earlier in the night to power past Redcar 55-35 in the second leg of their Semi-Final tie to ease through 97-83 on aggregate. They will now face either Edinburgh or Somerset – who must replay the other Semi-Final tie after a 90-90 draw - to decide the destination of the trophy. It will be the Rockets’ fifth appearance in the Final; they lifted the Cup in 1979 (beating Berwick), and were beaten finalists in 1977 (losing to Eastbourne), 1992 (Peterborough), 2005 (King’s Lynn). Trailing 48-42 from July’s first leg on Teesside, the Rockets made immediate inroads here. Olly Allen and Jason Bunyan opened the proceedings with a 4-2 either side of Hugh Skidmore, then Kasper Lykke weaved his way through the field to join Ben Morley on a 5-1 in Heat 2. Jason Bunyan and Tyson Nelson added further 5-1s when paired together in Heats 3 and 5 to drive the score to 22-8, and with the Tactical rule excluded from this competition there was simply no way back for the Bears from that. To their credit, Aaron Summers (two), Mickey Dyer and guest Ashley (who replaced the originally programmed Thomas Jorgensen) steadied their ship with race wins, but Nelson and Kasper Lykke finally sealed the deal mathematically with a 4-2 in Heat 14, before a 5-1 from Anders Mellgren and Nelson added an emphatic exclamation point to the final four laps of the tie. As team manager John Sampford said afterwards, “Losing Pontus Aspgren earlier on in the night did not bode well, but the rest of the boys really rallied round and got stuck in. It certainly helped that we made such a strong start because that kept the momentum and advantage in our favour, even though it took until Heat 14 to clinch the tie. “The boys are absolutely ecstatic to be in the Cup Final. After everything that has befallen us injury-wise this year, our season is still very much alive.” Rye House scorers: Anders Mellgren 14+1, Tyson Nelson 12+3, Jason Bunyan 12, Olly Allen 8, Ben Morley (guest) 5+1, Kasper Lykke 4+2, Pontus Aspgren R/R
Redcar scorers: Micky Dyer 9, Carl Wilkinson 7, Hugh Skidmore 6+1, Aaron Summers 6, Ashley Birks (guest) 5, Ulrich Ostergaard 2+1, Steve Worrall 0.

pressoffice@british-speedway.co.uk kburnett@dpb.nhs.uk 62 More... 1 Attachment233.8KB DOCRye House Speedway Press Release (Sept 3rd 2013).doc233KBSave Preview: Rye House vs Workington (Premier League) The Silver Ski Rockets return to action this Saturday (September 7th @ 7pm), determined to maintain last week’s double header buzz of League success against Scunthorpe and the Cup clincher over Redcar when they entertain high-flying Workington. The fixture is building as a very real case of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object. From a Rye House perspective, Saturday is all about vital ground preparation for the forthcoming Knock-Out Cup Final against either Edinburgh or Somerset. The pressure on the Comets is just as strong, however, given the match’s critical bearing on their Championship Play-Off ambitions. Ipswich, Edinburgh and Somerset have already qualified for post-season play, leaving the three remaining spots in the “Super Six” still to be fought over. It seems inconceivable that Newcastle (on 42 points, but with three of their remaining four fixtures at home) will miss out. That leaves a three-into-two situation for Workington (42 points, matches away at Rye and home to Edinburgh on Monday), Leicester (41 points, away at Newcastle on Sunday) and Redcar (also 41, away at Rye on September 14th) to play out a desperate game of musical chairs. Clearly, something has to give on Saturday, and Rye House team manager John Sampford is well aware of the threat at hand. “Workington have very strong Play-Off ambitions, and they are definitely coming down here to win. They have a very good side, so we know that they will be tough nuts to crack. “But we want to win ourselves to build on the momentum of the last few weeks. We need to be in a winning frame of mind for the Cup Final when it arrives. “Pontus (Aspgren) has advised that he will be OK to race after his heavy fall last Saturday, which is terrific news. “And while Ben Morley is committed to Kent at Stoke, if Jason (Garrity) is unable to ride, we have Oliver Greenwood ready to step in as cover. He has already done incredibly well, with paid 7 against Berwick on Bank Holiday Monday”. Teams (alphabetical order): Rye House: Olly Allen, Pontus Aspgren, Jason Bunyan (captain), Jason Garrity (if fit), Kasper Lykke, Anders Mellgren, Tyson Nelson Workington: Tero Aarnio, Rene Bach, Rusty Harrison, Kyle Howarth, Richard Lawson (captain), Chris Mills, Ashley Morris Saturday’s main fifteen heats will be followed by six additional races, as the Milton Keynes Knights take on King’s Lynn in the Midland Development League.

Allen Named to PLRC Silver Ski Rockets No.1 Olly Allen has been named as one of the sixteen qualifying riders for the Premier League Riders’ Championship at Sheffield on Sunday September 22nd.
The Owlerton event, which gets underway at 5pm (gates open 3.15pm), is always one of the most popular and best-attended meetings on the domestic calendar, and will feature a title defence from Edinburgh’s Craig Cook.
Each of the thirteen Premier League clubs will be represented by their top available rider based on current declarations, with Ben Barker (Ipswich) and Simon Stead (Sheffield) ruled out by injury.
The remaining three places go to the next three highest-averaged riders in the Premier League, subject to a maximum of two representatives per club.
Sheffield co-promoter David Hoggart said: “It’s a very impressive field, and with the Sheffield No.1 currently out injured it looks to be a wide-open event with no serious home track advantage.
“We’ve recently seen riders such as Craig Cook, Richie Worrall and Jason Doyle excelling in both leagues, and they will be joint-favourites for the title but there are several others who could spring a surprise.”
Admission prices for the showpiece event are unchanged from last year – adults £20, concessions £15, children (12-16) £5 and under-12s free – and any remaining re-admission tickets from the 2012 rained-off event will be honoured.
Sheffield’s famous carvery restaurant will also be open and supporters are strongly advised to book their tables in advance by contacting the club on 0114 285 3142. PLRC Qualifiers: Sebastian Alden (Berwick), Craig Cook (Edinburgh), Dakota North (Glasgow), Morten Risager (Ipswich), Magnus Karlsson (Leicester), Richie Worrall (Newcastle), Mikkel Bech (Plymouth), Micky Dyer (Redcar), Olly Allen (Rye House), Josh Auty (Scunthorpe), Ricky Wells (Sheffield), Jason Doyle (Somerset), Richard Lawson (Workington), Nick Morris (Somerset), Rene Bach (Workington), Theo Pijper (Edinburgh)

Cup Final Home Date The Silver Ski Rockets have set aside Sunday, October 6th (with a 2pm start), as the date for their home leg in the Knock-Out Cup Final. The move away from their regular Saturday night slot avoids a clash – and therefore also splitting supporters’ loyalties - with the televised final round of the Grand Prix. The meeting at Torun in Poland is, of course, one from which former Rocket – and current series leader - Tai Woffinden – could emerge as the 2013 World Champion. Just who the Rockets will face for the silverware should finally be confirmed the week after next. Following an aggregate 90-90 tie in their Semi-Final, Somerset and Edinburgh have now agreed dates for the replay, with the Rebels hosting the first leg on Wednesday, September 18th, and the Monarchs returning the favour two nights later.

Too Tight to Call Against Comets Rye House 45 Workington 45 (Premier League; Saturday, September 7th 2013) Despite providing the winner in just five of the fifteen races, the Silver Ski Rockets’ more balanced scoring evened out the Comets’ big hitters in a closely contested 45-45 draw. A seesaw encounter saw the Rockets bounce back from a visiting 5-1 in the opening heat to level the level the score four laps later, as Kasper Lykke surged around both Chris Mills and Ashley Morris to join Ben Morley at the front in Heat 2. It was Morley’s turn to be the focus of attention in Heat 8 as he held Rusty Harrison off by the narrowest of margins to partner Pontus Aspgren to another 5-1 that once again bring Rye level, this time at 24-24. The home side then took the lead in Heat 10, when early race leader Tero Aarnio drifted to the back with mechanical problems to hand Aspgren and Olly Allen a further maximum. The advantage widened to 39-33 when Jason Bunyan and Morley finished either side of Ashley Morris two heats later, only for Workington hot shots Lawson and Rene Bach to blast a 5-1 in the next race, and then Aarnio and Ashley Morris to level the score with a 4-2 over Tyson Nelson and Morley. That last result came after the race was originally called back for an unsatisfactory start for early movement by Aarnio, with both Rockets hitting the deck in a second bend collision after the red lights had come on. The 42-42 score-line set up a last race decider – Aspgren and Anders Mellgren versus the unbeaten Lawson and Bach - which required two attempts for completion. The first brought a warning for Bach, again for early movement, while the second saw the Dane quickly hit the Dane quickly hitting the front but followed home by the Rockets’ duo, who closed down Lawson to ensure a share of the spoils. The result leaves the Comets on the brink of qualification for the Championship Play-Offs, and was thoroughly deserved, with Lawson and Bach each dropping points in just a single race and lesser lights Aarnio and Morris providing vital back-up. The Rockets also deserved something from the match in what was their third home draw in the Premier League this season. Mellgren – who will finish the season as the team’s top scorer – was once again into double figures, while Aspgren showed few side- effects from his heavy fall of a week earlier. Perhaps their biggest hero, though, was a rider who started the day not even scheduled to be at the match! Rye House asset Ben Morley was originally due at Stoke with his National League team Kent, only for that fixture to suffer an early rain-off and free him up for guest coverage for Jason Garrity. As he explained afterwards, “I got the phone call at 12 o’clock, telling me that Stoke was off and to get my backside to Rye! “Tonight went really well, just like my last meeting here (which netted paid 13 across a double header). I was disappointed about my last race, where I hit a rut that stopped me dead, but I can’t complain about the rest of the night.” Regarding his being collected by team mate Tyson Nelson in the first attempt at that Heat 14, Morley’s analysis of the moment comes with a smile. “Tyson just rode into me. He picked up a bit of drive and I was in the way!” As for his dash to the line with Rusty Harrison in Heat 8, “I kept going wider and wider every lap because I knew that Pontus (Aspgren) was inside me. Fortunately I came back to the inside on the last bend. I looked across and I could see Rusty’s front wheel, but I knew I’d got it!” The Essex teenager will be a part of both the British U-19 and the National League Riders’ Championships that take place at Coventry (September 20th) and Rye House (21st) on successive nights. He has finished on the rostrum in the former – claiming third place in 2011 – and sixth in the latter (2010), but although quietly confident refuses to be drawn on any predictions this time around. “I’ve got one after the other, but it should be alright. I’ll prepare myself as I normally do and aim to make good starts, and just go from there.” Rye House scorers: Olly Allen 4+1 (4 rides) Pontus Aspgren 9+2 (5) Jason Bunyan 4+1 (4) Tyson Nelson 8 (4) Anders Mellgren 10 (5) Kasper Lykke 3+2 (3) Ben Morley 7+2 (5) Workington scorers: Richard Lawson 11+1 (5 rides) Rusty Harrison 5 (4) Kyle Howarth 2 (4) Tero Aarnio 8 (4) Rene Bach 11+1 (5) Ashley Morris 8+1 (6) Chris Mills 0 (3) Match Points: Rye House 1 Workington 2

Cup Final Home Date The Silver Ski Rockets sign off their home League programme this Saturday (September 14th @ 7pm) with a quick return visit from Redcar. The Rockets bested the Bears 55-35 at the end of August to wrap up a place in this year’s Knock-Out Cup Final, but team manager John Sampford expects the Teessiders to be a different proposition this time around. For a start, the Bears are level on match points with Leicester for the sixth and final Play-Off spot on offer and, failing a positive result, need to lose by less than 23 points to make the cut ahead of the Lions on race points differential. Sampford certainly anticipates a hard match. “It will be a much tougher meeting than the Cup match. For a start, the Bears will be a team on a mission, looking to come here and win or at the very least keep it very close throughout. “It will be different in other ways, too. We both start level on Saturday, whereas last time we had the experience of the first match of a double header whereas most of their riders came in cold. Plus, they have moved their team order around a bit with the new averages, which will make a few differences. “But as I’ve said before we are also determined to keep in a positive frame of mind, so that we have the maximum momentum heading into the Cup Final.” Saturday’s teams (in alphabetical order): Rye House: Olly Allen, Pontus Aspgren, Jason Bunyan (captain), Jason Garrity (if fit), Kasper Lykke, Anders Mellgren, Tyson Nelson Redcar: Max Dilger (if fit), Micky Dyer, Matej Kus or R/R, Ulrich Ostergaard, Hugh Skidmore, Aaron Summers (captain), Carl Wilkinson Saturday’s main fifteen races will be followed by six more as the Milton Keynes Knights collide with Castleford in the Midland Development League. A Knights victory would ensure a place in the competition’s Championship Grand Final, the home leg of which would also be staged at Rye House.

Preview: NLRC The annual staging of the National League Riders’ Championship is now less than a week away and takes place at Rye House this Saturday, September 21st with a 7pm start. The meeting is kindly sponsored by the Paradise Wildlife Park in nearby Broxbourne as the home of the National Speedway Museum. It will be the 20th staging of the event, which first saw life in 1994 when Andy Howe of the Cleveland Bays was the inaugural winner. Subsequent titlists have included James Wright (2004), Adam Roynon (2006), Tai Woffinden (2007), Craig Cook (2009), Jason Garrity (2011) and, twelve months ago, Ashley Birks. The championship staging has been linked to Hoddesdon since 2001 and three Rye House riders have celebrated the gold in that time: David Mason, Barrie Evans and Steve Boxall. Technically, there are no current Rye House riders on show next Saturday, but there will be two with very strong links for local supporters to get behind. Kent King Ben Morley has officially been classed as a guest in this season’s appearances for the Rockets, and has rattled off some impressive scores for the side in recent weeks, while fellow King Steve Boxall – last with Rye in 2011 – will, from above, be aiming to lift the trophy for a second time. That is also the target for 1997 League Riders Champion Jon Armstrong, who is now with Mildenhall. The qualifying field includes two other riders who have already tasted national 500cc success in 2012 British U-19 titlist Stefan Nielsen (Mildenhall) and 2009 U-15 winner Ashley Morris (Dudley), while a third name could be added to the list depending on the result of this Friday night’s U-19 event at Coventry. Additionally, both Steve Worrall (Stoke) and Tom Perry (Isle of Wight) have been just one place adrift of gold at U-21 level, and Joe Jacobs (Coventry) has twice been runner-up in what is now the U-19 Final. Paul Starke (Dudley) and Adam Ellis (Isle of Wight), who is in his first full season of domestic racing, are both averaging out at over 9 ½ points a match so far, while the Big Three who are posting 10-plus records will also be there. They are Buxton’s Charles Wright (10.20 in the latest weekly standings), Lewis Blackbird of Dudley (10.58) and nationally ranked No.1 Robert Lambert (10.81). The 15 year old King’s Lynn Young Star, who has swept all before him so far, will be making his first competitive appearance at Rye House after a series of demonstration outings at the circuit in the past. The field is rounded out by 2012 Rye House Raider James Sarjeant, who has stepped in for injured British U-21 Champion Robert Branford, Buxton’s Liam Carr and Lewis Kerr (King’s Lynn), who has also been turning plenty of heads at a Premier League level as a 7 point star with Newcastle. Promoter Len Silver is very much looking forward to The Big Night. “We are very proud to once again stage the Championship at Rye House. It is always a night of great excitement and unpredictability, with twists and turns thrown in. “I wouldn’t want to pick a winner for Saturday, as so many riders in this field are capable of winning it. Quite frankly, anything can happen on the night.” NLRC – Qualifying riders: Charles Wright, Liam Carr (Buxton); Joe Jacobs, James Sarjeant (replacing Robert Branford) (Coventry); Paul Starke, Lewis Blackbird, Ashley Morris (Dudley); Steve Boxall, Ben Morley (Kent); Tom Perry, Adam Ellis (Isle of Wight); Robert Lambert, Lewis Kerr (King’s Lynn); Stefan Nielsen, Jon Armstrong (Mildenhall); Steve Worrall (Stoke). Preview: Berwick vs Rye House The Silver Ski Rockets set off for their final away match of their 2013 League campaign when they venture north to Berwick for a re-arranged fixture this Saturday (September 21st). Team manager John Sampford is the first to admit that “As I’ve said several times before, our closing League fixtures are all about keeping the guys on-track, giving them another meeting and very much building momentum to the Cup Final. “The records show that Shielfield Park has not historically been a happy hunting ground for Rockets teams, although we came really close to victory on two separate occasions in 2011. The side we’ve got this year, though, is more than capable of going virtually anywhere and giving a good performance, as we’ve already shown twice at another so-called “graveyard” in Sheffield. “Without making any specific predictions, I’m quietly confident that we can do ourselves justice on Saturday night.” Rye House team (alphabetical order): Olly Allen, Pontus Aspgren, Jason Bunyan (captain), Jason Garrity (if fit), Kasper Lykke, Anders Mellgren, Tyson Nelson Although the Silver Ski Rockets are on the road, there is still PLENTY of action taking place at Rye House on Saturday night, with the annual staging of the National League Riders’ Championship, which is sponsored by Broxbourne’s Paradise Wildlife Park. A full meeting preview has already been published separately. One late change to the line-up is that Josh Bates will replace Jon Armstrong as one of Mildenhall’s representatives. The action starts at 7pm.
