Poland Comes to Rye House! There is little doubting that in many ways, Poland has become the centre of the Speedway universe, whether it be in terms of crowds, drawing power for riders or its status as current World Cup holders – and winners of six of the last nine titles. Now, however, it looks as though a part of that country has found an unexpected attraction to a corner of East Hertfordshire. Polish First League club PSŻ Poznań have approached Rye House for advice on safety fence design in advance of major changes to their own circuit. As club vice-president Bartosz Kuczynski explained in his initial enquiry, “We are looking for inspiration in Britain - the cradle of speedway - because we know there are certain differences between the stadiums in our countries and we wish to learn something new”. Rye House supremo Len Silver’s has already responded to the request, and his description provide a fascinating technical insight into both the Hoddesdon fence’s original design and Silver’s approach to the air fence element that has been made obligatory at all British circuits in 2014. “The fence at Rye House is a fully suspended fence with no permanent posts behind it which riders can hit. Previously it was a chain-link fence with 50cm wooden kick boards, but from the 2014 season it will be an air fence in the corners and chain-link in the straights. “In terms of specific design, the strong metal posts are set well back from the track at each corner and straining wires are stretched tightly between these posts. In the corners the straining wires are pulled into a curved shape by short wires pulling at right angles to the main wire and these are held in place by stakes in the ground which do not protrude above ground level (and are therefore no hazard). “We are using the same principle with the air fence so that if a rider hits the air fence and slides under it, the fence will simply lift and the rider cannot get hurt other than by hitting his own motorcycle. We are sure that for rider safety, it is the best fence anywhere.” While many Rye House supporters already have general knowledge about the fence and the benefits that its collapsible construction provided in the past, Silver’s comments here provide an extra level of detail and insight into the technical mechanics behind it. Bartosz himself is so intrigued that he is now planning a visit to the circuit to see for himself! We will keep you posted with full coverage of that occasion.

Aussie Series: Round Two Results Tyson Nelson had to settle for another 3 point showing in last night’s second round of the Australian Championship series, which was staged at Undera Park in Victoria, but only after enduring an early mechanical stoppage when well placed. The 20 year old was battling for the lead with Dakota North in his opening ride when the gremlins struck, and was later to suffer a fall in the aptly-titled Heat 13. The round was won by 2012 World Champion Chris Holder, who headed home Event One winner Jason Doyle and Justin Sedgmen in a Grand Final that was re-run following Troy Batchelor’s exclusion. It was a remarkable turn-around for Holder, who had earlier crept into a Semi-Final run-off after scoring just three points from his first three programmed rides! The final leg of the series will take place at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide on Saturday night. Scorers (race points from main 20 heat programme): Troy Batchelor 14, Jason Doyle 13, Justin Sedgmen 11 (qualified for Grand Final), Dakota North 10, Josh Grajczonek 9, Rohan Tungate 9, Chris Holder 9 (qualified for Semi-Final), Cameron Woodward 8, Mason Campton 8, Sam Masters 8, Max Fricke 7, Jake Anderson 5, Tyson Nelson 3, Daine Stevens 2, Kurt Shields 2, Jack Holder 1, Matthew Day (reserve) 1

Aussie Series: Round Three Result Tyson Nelson recorded his best series score of 5 points in the Australian Championship finale at Gillman Speedway last night, after recovering from a nightmare start. A second ride tapes exclusion and third ride duck left him with just one point to show from his first three outings, before his night finally sprang into life with two second places. He battled Sam Masters for the lead over the first three laps of Heat 13 before having to settle for two points, before keeping Jake Anderson behind him in an equally hard encounter for another second place in Heat 18. Nelson finished the series in 14th place. Chris Holder claimed the national title for a fifth time, ahead of Jason Doyle and frequent 2013 Rye House guest Josh Grajczonek, who outpaced Rohan Tungate in a run-off to settle the final Aussie place in the Grand Prix Qualifiers. Nelson next red letter date is January 25th, when he will be back at Gillman hoping for much bigger things in the Australian U-21 Championship Final. Scorers (main 20 heat programme): Jason Doyle 15, Rohan Tungate 13, Chris.Holder 11 (qualified for Grand Final), JoshGrajczonek 10, Max Fricke 10, Mason Campton 10, Justin.Sedgmen 9 (qualified for Semi-Final), Cameron.Woodward 9, Sam.Masters 7, Dakota.North 7, Jack.Holder 6, Tyson.Nelson 5, Jake.Anderson 5, Matty.Day 1, Daine.Stevens 1, Robert.Medson (reserve) 1, Kurt Shields 0 Semi-Final: Mason Campton (qualified for Grand Final), Josh Grajczonek, Justin Sedgmen, Max Fricke (fex) Grand Final: Rohan Tungate, Chris Holder, Mason Campton, Jason Doyle (fex) Run-Off for 3rd in Series: Josh Grajczonek, Rohan Tungate

Garrity All-Clear… Eventually! There was quite a worry for the Rockets' management team when Jason Garrity arrived in the French resort of La Plagne for the annual Silver Ski holiday. As the serious leg injury sustained at Sheffield in May of 2013 had taken much longer to heal than anyone had imagined, and knowing that skiing steadily was not in Jason's vocabulary, the worry was understandable. Then, on the very first day of the trip, Jason got his wrist entangled with a drag lift button to leave him hanging by one arm a metre off the ground and unable to disentangle himself! Everyone was left to think that the kid from Manchester was in for a week of trauma! Fortunately a tall ski instructor witnessed the drag lift incident, and was able to free him and avoid a nasty wrist or shoulder injury, so all was well. Kelvin Tatum, the Sky TV commentator and himself a former star rider, who was on holiday in the same chalet, expressed amazement at Jason's ability and fearlessness on skis. He remarked, “If Jason rides his bike anything like he handles a pair of skis, we are all in for some excitement and he will win a lot of races. Len Silver philosophically replied, "I told you so!" At the end of the rather dramatic week, Garrity was still in one piece and his leg gave him no trouble at all, to everyone's relief.

Silver Salutes Rossiter Appointment Following today’s announcement of the appointment of Alun Rossiter as the new Great Britain team manager, Rye House boss Len Silver has already sent his personal congratulations to “Rosco”, and also pointed out the many similarities that existed at the time of Len's own appointment to the job. As older supporters still remember, the English riders at that time were not considered to be good enough to face the World, and instead a team labelled "Britain" was fielded using the top New Zealand stars such as Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger amongst others. When Silver was offered the job, he insisted on tracking only English riders and at the same time demonstrated publicly his faith in them. It was more than coincidental that that approach coincided with the most successful period in England's Speedway history. As Silver points out, "Alun is now rather like I was in those days: a flamboyant character with a love for his riders. “I have no doubt that this factor will be a strong force in bringing our national team back to the fore under his leadership." Pilgrim’s Progress Simon Lambert has reported that he is making excellent progress in terms of a full recovery from the operation to correct last season’s ankle injury, and is now cycling twenty miles every day without any side effects. With a huge programme of racing scheduled across all three British Leagues, fitness and organisation will be the key to success for the Boston-born rider in what will be his busiest ever year in the sport. Rye House promoter Len Silver – who will also oversee Lambert at National League Kent – comments that “I am expecting Simon to really move forward in his career with the vast amount of racing he will be doing. There is nothing like large numbers of laps to bring out the best in any rider - and Simon is no different."

Rye House Fixtures Released The Silver Ski Rockets’ official 2014 fixtures have been released this morning (see attachment), and certainly offer Rye supporters plenty of early season excitement. As previously announced, the first home and away matches of the new campaign will see the Rockets renew a traditional rivalry with Peterborough in the East of England Cup, with Rye visiting the East of England Showground on March 18th and the Panthers returning the favour at Hoddesdon on Saturday, March 29th (7pm start), but a trip to a further East Anglian rival – Ipswich - has now also been shoehorned into March as the Rockets’ opening League Cup fixture on the 27th. The Witches will be in town themselves on Easter Sunday, while other April visitors to Hertfordshire will be Plymouth – complete with World Cup ace Ben Barker – on the 5th, defending League champions and Cup winners Somerset on the 12th, and 2012 titlists Scunthorpe on the 26th for what will be the fixture that kick-starts the Rockets’ main Premier League campaign. From a local derby perspective, Peterborough will be back at Hoddesdon on Sunday, May 4th for the Rockets’ final group match in the League Cup, with the Panthers also returning in the League on July 19th. Ipswich will visit on League duty on August 16th. Bank holiday weekends will see home action on Sundays, rather than the Bank Holiday Monday slots operated in the past. As mentioned above, Ipswich visit on Easter Sunday and Peterborough on May 4th, while the other Sunday dates will be filled by Plymouth (May 25th) and Berwick (August 24th). All these Sunday meetings will have afternoon - 2pm - starts. The first round of the Knock-Out Cup sees the Rockets up against Glasgow, with the Tigers hosting the first leg on Sunday, May 10th, and the second and deciding leg set for Rye on Saturday the 17th. The aggregate winners will meet Newcastle in the quarter-finals. Away from home, there are no less than three mini Northern tours, with the Rockets visiting Redcar and Edinburgh on consecutive nights in the League in June (19th-20th), Berwick and Newcastle in July (26th-27th), and Workington and Glasgow in August (30th-31st). Please note that with the exception of March’s home and away challenge matches against Peterborough, the fixture list shown is for official competitive team encounters only. Other events such as the Luke Bowen Testimonial Meeting, the National League Riders’ Championship (Sunday, September 28th) and the British Youth Championship round will be added separately.

Pilgrim’s Progress II As an update to our earlier news piece, Simon Lambert has recovered so well from his ankle injury and subsequent operation, as evidenced by his new cycling regime, that his doctors have now given him clearance to ski. He will consequently be joining Rye House promoter Len Silver and British World Champion Tai Woffinden on the Fench Alpine slopes for a week, commencing Feb 9th. Clearly relieved that his personal trauma and drama is moving behind him, Simon is elated about his late opportunity to travel. “I cannot wait to get on the slopes with “Woffy”. He is truly amazing on skis and I know we will have great fun together…. I am just delighted that it is all building so positively now toward the new season.”

Trésarrieu Flies In Mathieu Trésarrieu has come to the rescue of Rye House after the Silver Ski Rockets have seen Tyson Nelson’s working visa application turned down. It is the second time in three years that the “Mr Rocket” rider of the year – fifth in tonight’s Australian U-21 Championship at Gillman – has been ruled out of British action. Nelson’s visa rejection initially left promoter Len Silver briefly contemplating the option of delaying a change to his line-up in the hope that the situation could be expedited quickly. Silver soon recognised, however, that both the timescale and outcome were ultimately uncertain, which pushed him towards a rapid solution. “I think that to be secure in the knowledge that we have seven good riders fully signed up had to be the right way to go, as I could not face the agony of two years ago.” Having originally been the first club to declare their planned seven, the Rockets were now facing the prospect of being one of the last to actually complete it, and with few rider options available in order to fill the gap thanks to busy Continental diaries. They found their man quickly, however, in Mathieu Trésarrieu. The “Flying Frenchman” was last seen in this country with Ipswich, posting averages (including bonus points) of 7.68 and 6.69 in 2011 and 2012, respectively. That former figure, by the way, included a remarkable 12 point haul at Hoddesdon that consisted of four straight wins and a Heat 15 duck. Away from Suffolk, Trésarrieu’s career has also taken in the Isle of Wight, Redcar, Peterborough and Leicester. He arrives in Hertfordshire with the credentials of four national titles and a bronze medal in the 2007 World Long-Track Championship. He placed seventh in that same event in 2013. Silver is delighted to see the French ace on board with Rye. “It was very easy agreeing terms with Mathieu, who speaks perfect English as opposed to my simple French, and he was delighted to be given the opportunity to ride for the Rockets. For my part, I am looking forward to getting to know him on a personal level. I have no doubt about his ability as a rider because he has performed very well on our track in the past. “Mathieu will come in on a 5.84 average on loan from Redcar, who I thank very much for their help. The change in our team is of course subject to final BSPA approval, but that should be automatic.” Team manager John Sampford, meanwhile, is confident that the Rockets’ late change will not upset the dynamic of the side. “We are obviously very disappointed that Tyson will not be with us – we were looking to see him improve and ratchet up his scores again this year – but Mathieu is also capable of upping his scores on what he achieved in 2012. “He’s obviously been to Rye before, and it won’t take him long to get the hang of the track again, although he could be even more useful away from home. “His starting average of 5.84 is just 0.32 below Tyson’s, which means that he will kick off the year in the No.2 heat leader positioned, behind Edward Kennett and ahead of Jason Bunyan, that Tyson would otherwise have occupied. “Starting averages only set the ground rules, though. As we all know, a team’s success is based around riders improving their averages, and with the exception of Edward every one of the side is capable of doing just that. They’ve all got good equipment, and they are fresh, fit and ready to go.”

To Declare or Not to Declare? Not surprisingly, the rejection of Tyson Nelson’s visa application and the subsequent drafting in of Mathieu Trésarrieu as a Silver Ski Rocket has provoked a number of supporter comments on public forums. One that has surfaced makes the argument that teams should not declare a rider’s inclusion in their new season line-ups until the necessary paperwork is fully in place. This is, after all, the second time in two years that the Rockets have been burned, and the second time that Nelson has been ruled out of action. Is this a fair point? Is there a raising of false hopes? Rye House promoter Len Silver gives his own views here, and also provides details of just what is involved in the rider visa process in order to help clear up possible misconceptions. And it is more detailed than you might think. Silver starts at the beginning. “Before leaving the UK to return to Australia at the end of last season, Tyson had in his possession all the paperwork necessary for the issue of a working visa. This included the Rye House registration for overseas sports persons' sponsorship, issued by the UK Border Agency and fully paid up. “There was also an official document from the BSPA authorising Tyson's acceptance as part of the Rye House team, plus a personal contract issued by Rye House Speedway giving details of earnings, living accommodation and other items as required by the British authorities for overseas workers. “Back in Australia, Tyson had in place all the requirements necessary for the issue of a visa, which is in contrast to the first occasion he was refused, when some of the requirements were slightly wrong. “So we had no reason to think that it was anything more than a "rubber stamp" issue. We were not informed of a new edict issued from the Australian side which stated that there must be a twelve month gap between trips to UK under that particular sponsorship scheme. “A number of British promoters have been caught by the same issue, and some of the individual riders involved also have other items which have affected their visas, several of which have never been an effective item previously. “At what point do you communicate your plans publically to your supporters? Do you leave a “tbc” in your line-up for what could potentially be a 2-3 month period when you don’t envisage a problem and have no reason to envisage one? “I’m convinced we took the right approach on that.”

Bunyan for Aukland GP Congratulations are due to Silver Ski Rockets captain Jason Bunyan, who has been confirmed as the Wildcard nomination for the New Zealand Grand Prix for the third year running. The Aukland round will take place on April 5th. As Bunyan admitted after today’s Grand Prix press conference, “It was a very strange attending a press conference and not knowing if you’re in or not!” Ahead of his red letter date, the 8-time NZ national champion has the opportunity to equal Larry Ross’ all-time record of nine titles when he rides in this year’s championship at Invercargill’s Oreti Park on February 8th.

Lights, Camera, Action! Speedway and rock music have been surprisingly infrequent bedfellows over the years, even though they potentially have so much in common. At their peak, both fields offer drama and excitement, a sense of danger and power, and a total energy pump. The Rock “n” Racing Connection may have been missing in the past, but all of that changed at Rye House Stadium late last autumn when 2014 Testimonial man Luke Bowen, Tyson Nelson, Chris Mills and Marc Owen took to the track for the action sequences of a music video shoot for the You Me at Six single “Fresh Start Fever”. For those unfamiliar with them, You Me at Six are an alternative rock band that has enjoyed five Top 40 singles to date and struck Top 5 with their last two albums. After three earlier nominations, they captured the Best British Band prize at the 2012 Kerrang! Awards. Their latest album, “Cavalier Youth”, which features “Fresh Start Fever”, was released on Monday. As one of the racing participants, Luke Bowen remembers the day’s events well. “They filmed it on a Sunday, after one of our Training Days. It was a very long shoot because they needed the racing shots to be at night under lights. Unfortunately, it was absolutely tipping it down, but we had to keep going out on track again and again to get all the takes and shooting angles. You really had to be there to see the state of our bikes and kevlars afterwards! “The band itself was there for about an hour, as we were going in and out. There were loads of people floating about throughout – the film crew and actors - so we didn’t really get to meet them face to face. “They’re a big band now and they’ve made it onto the A-list at Radio One. I’ve listened to the song, and a few of their others, since the shoot. I do think “Fresh Start Fever” is really good, with a strong beat and catchy tune.” Although only briefly in the main chart when released last month, “Fresh Start Fever” has reached No.1 in the separate Rock chart. At the last count, the video had passed the 300,000 hit mark on Youtube. You can watch it yourself on Youtube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tYucGxToC4. Bowen’s Big Day: July 13th Silver Ski Rockets stalwart Luke Bowen has named Sunday, July 13th as the date for his Testimonial meeting. The event already has a name too – “Luke’s Ten Year Take-Off” – as a tie-in to his established nickname of The Bowen 747. That rare example of a single club career man, Luke is already excited about his big day. “It’s the day after the British Cardiff Grand Prix, which will make for a real party atmosphere weekend. “I’m hoping to finalise the meeting format in the next few weeks, but I’m aiming to have a little something for everybody, with one or two surprises thrown in there.” Sponsorship opportunities are set to be announced in the near future, with special social media accounts also planned to be set up to keep supporters right up to date with all Testimonial developments and breaking news. While his Testimonial meeting provides the obvious centre-piece to his racing calendar, Bowen is excited about the forthcoming campaign in general as he re-launches his career following 2012’s broken thigh. “I had one meeting last season, when I finished second in an individual event at Kent, but I’m even hungrier now after all that time off. I’m really looking forward to the season; I just want to keep riding, and riding, and riding. “I’m feeling really fit again, physically. My body’s feeling stronger and there’s been no recurrence of pain in my leg. OK, I’m not race-fit again yet, but I’m planning plenty of practice over the next few weeks so that I can be there come the start of the season. “I’ve also purchased two new engines from (former Grand prix star) Hans Andersen, so I’m going to be more than competitive.” Clearly, it’s all building toward a real “take-off” season in more ways than one for one of the sport’s most personable and loyal servants. And remember to put that key date in your diary: Sunday, July 13th.

Bunyan Wins North Island Title Rye House captain Jason Bunyan enjoyed a faultless afternoon at Rosebank yesterday (Sunday) to win New Zealand’s North Island Championship. The 8-time NZ national champion and newly nominated Auckland Grand Prix Wildcard went through the card unbeaten to take the title. You can see his Semi-Final and Grand Final victories here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fFdmq4Cuf0&sns=fb Bunyan’s next stop is Oreti Park in Invercargill this Saturday when he goes for a record-equalling New Zealand title No.9. Happy Birthday, Mr Promoter! Rye House promoter Len Silver celebrated his 82nd birthday yesterday in his ski resort in the French Alps. A heavy snowfall throughout made the day, by Len’s own admission, a “lazy” one. He also added that former Hackney Hawks star “Finn Thomsen called from Spain and everyone is being kind...but I am assuring them all that I do not feel a day older than 81!” Happy birthday, Len! Press and Practice Dates The 2014 Silver Ski Rockets will enjoy two press and practice opportunities at Rye House ahead of their East of England Cup opener at Peterborough on March 18th. The Rockets’ P&P dates are scheduled for the successive days of Friday, March 14th and Saturday, March 15th, with each session starting at 11am. Meanwhile, work on erecting the new air fence at Rye House will begin in earnest this month following the installation of straining wires and new posts back in November. The work will include new chain link fence in both straights with the back straight being made wider by 70cm. This should have the effect of making the racing even faster, so Chris Neath's track record of 55.1 seconds which was set back in 2010 may well be in danger this season.
