Training track, 160 yards, in Mortlake Road, Chiswick. Opened 1957, closed late 1958. Only wide enough to allow two riders on track. Previously a cycle speedway late 1940s to circa 1954. As a team for away matches, first known as Champions and later Nomads. Competed at Southern Area League tracks. Address: Mortlake Road, Chiswick, London, SW.

Chiswick Nomads had a training track near Chiswick Bridge in the late 1950s. The organiser was rider Ted Payne. They did not race any home matches but did compete in some away challenge matches against Southern Area League teams at this time.
It has been suggested that the venue be included as a LONDON CLUB. Any opinions on its inclusion?

Some of the Nomads riders had outings at the Firs Stadium in Norwich. I dont see any reason to discont this track

Yeah! Bring 'em on. Among the track's riders were Bob Thomas, Arthur Ashby and Bob Warner. I also think that Dave Freeborn (a Wimbledon junior in the late 1950s) also rode there.
Harry Emery and Ted Payne also used to show their paces on the track. Wasn't Emery a graduate from army speedway?

I remember Dave Freeborn from Eastborne in the S A L days. Ken Shepherd was another "Nomad" I remember

Did Ted Payne's son Steve ride at Chiswick. Another who probably used the track was Roy Pickering, an 'elderly' but more than useful performer on junior tracks at this time.

I think Roy Pickering is the father of Barry Pickering, who was PRO for Wimbledon in their Conference League days 2002-05?

According to the programme from the 1952 National finals, held at Chiswick Comets, the track was located in Riverside Drive,Chiswick. If you look on Google Maps, between Riverside Drive and Promenade Approach Road and switch to the Satellite View, there is something very close to the river, which looks like a track to me. Any comments or observations, please?

Hi thebaldeagle1932, Yes, my father Roy Pickering did ride for the Nomads (alongside appearances for other Southern Area League tracks) around 1957-59. Sadly. this was a decade before I was born, so all I have are some photos of him in a Chiswick Nomads team pic, with my Dad sitting proudly astride his JAP. I remember that he was friends for many years with Dave Freeborn, both of whom were lifelong Wimbledon fans. Whilst I inherited none of his ability with motorbikes, I did become a massive Dons fan myself and was proud to act as PRO for the team in their recent CL era.

There was a rider with the surname Pickering who rode, I am certain!!, at Long Eaton and possibly Newcastle around 1953. Was it Roy or maybe a relative?
Apart from Chiswick Nomads, where else did Roy ride? Was he a product of army speedway?

In the days of Roy Pickering Speedway was going "down" in popularity so riders like Roy had to travel miles round the U K just to get a second half ride. It doesnt seem much better now with virtually no second halfs about

Administrator's message: can discussion about riders generally be posted on the LONDON RIDERS board please. This section should be used for general material in regard to the happenings at the Chiswick Nomads track. Members' co-operation would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Are there any results of team matches involving Chiswick Nomads?

I was under the impression that the Chiswick Nomads used the Polytechnic Sports Ground, Great Chertsey Road, which is a stone's throw from Riverside Drive. I only show results at Eastbourne from 1958 Eastbourne v Chiswick Nomads 46-38 Eastbourne Eaglets v Chiswick Nomads 10-14, 16-7, 16-8
