Some years ago, while at the Colindale newspaper museum in north London, I was reading the 1938 'Speedway News' file and saw a brief mention about a forthcoming meeting at Crayford for that year.
The only rider name I am positive offhand as a starter there was Mick Mitchell, later to ride in post-war years with distinction for both Hull and Swindon. Mick also saw action with Crystal Palace (1939), New Cross (1946 and 1947) and Birmingham (1947).
I am uncertain, but he possibly also had a spell with either Leicester or St Austell - or maybe both tracks?

If baldeagle read about speedway at Crayford in 1938, the information in the main header of a 1935 start and 1937 shutdown, before the 1968 resumption could be wrong.
Can anyone clarify the actual pre-WW2 years of operation?

Wilf Plant, then a Wimbledon rider, also rode in some meetings at Crayford in 1935.

Crayford pre-war years of operation: they opened on 21st April 1930 to 9th October 1931. Then reopened on 25th August 1935 closing at the end of 1936 (date available shortly). There was no racing in 1937 as construction on the new stadium had begun earlier in the year. Hope this helps

I've reviewed both Speedway News and local papers for 1938 with no mention of speedway at Crayford. The previous post about "Mick Mitchell/Crayford 1938" may refer actually to Catford, which was mentioned as a probable venue in 1938 in the Speedway News
