This competition was very important to the London tracks up till the mid 50s. To take part you had to be on the books of a London based track. I think it was run as an invitation event after then and the likes of Peter Craven rode in it. The list of winners is quite impressive and I have Barry Briggs, Eric Chitty, Brian Crutcher, Vic Duggan, Tom Farndon, Joe Francis, Ron Johnson, Vic Huxley, Aub Lawson, Jack Milne, Ronnie Moore, Jack Ormston, Cyril Roger, Alec Statham, Split Waterman and Jack Young. This constitutes 16 of the Speedway Greats and the likes of Tommy Price and the renowned Williams brothers do not even get a mention.

Is there a chronological list of winners of the London Riders Championship available? The tracks it was staged, the years, the riders and the country and club they represented.

Tommy Farndon won the title in three successive seasons on his home track at Crystal Palace in 1931, 1932 and 1933. Based on Tungate's list, the above information would appear incorrect?

I have turned up Speedway Digest 1962 and it gives the same list as mine posted on here. It is possible my handwritten listing was from the Digest but I cannot say if this was so for certain. I have copied out lists from various sources over the years so it is possible

I have a copy of Norman Jacobs' 'Speedway in London' (published 2001). It lists the champions as correctly given by both Tungate and the 1962 'Speedway Digest.' It also gives further winners as follows:

Swindon 1965 Sverra Harfeldt, West Ham, Norway 1966 Norman Hunter, West Ham 1967 Colin Pratt, Hackney 1968 ColinPratt, Hackney 1969 Trevor Hedge, Wimbledon 1970 Trevor Hedge, Wimbledon 1971 Bengt Jansson, Hackney, Sweden 1972 Ronnie Moore, Wimbledon, New Zealand 1973 Barry Thomas, Hackney 1974 Barry Thomas, Hackney 1975 Dave Jessup, Leicester 1976 Gordon Kennett, London White City 1977 Larry Ross, Wimbledon, New Zealand 1978 Keith White, Hackney 1979 Larry Ross, Wimbledon, New Zealand 1980 Finn Thomsen, Hackney. NOTE: March 7, 2010: Finn Thomsen is Denmark, not Sweden. Admin, London Speedways.

Crossed Hammers ..................................... The listing above gives Swindon, Leicester & Coventry as the Home track for winners so some form of invitation must have been used to arrive at a field for the event in those years. Do you know how they were arrived at? Was it by voting of supporters by any chance?
Hackney, Wimbledon or White City would have been the only tracks running in these years, and there would have had to be use of New National League or Division Two riders to make a "true" London based set of riders Modify to show tracks as follows .............................
From the Researcher Website it shows ........................... 25.7.1953 @ Harringay 7.9.1954 @ West Ham 6.10.1964 @ West Ham 4.7.1975 @ Hackney Wick

It would be interesting if one could find the tracks where the event was staged after the loss of its traditional Crystal Palace/New Cross home in the early 1950s.

1953 ...... The trophy was scheduled for New Cross on 24 June 1953 in the programme of 6 May. It was still listed on that date in the prog 3 June 1953. Rangers had 3 June Coronation Cup v West Ham, 6 June League @ Belle Vue, 10 June C Cup v Bradford, 11 June C Cup @ Wembley, 12 June @ Harringay & 17 June v Harringay in the London Cup then followed the London Riders Championship on 24 June. After this it was Stoke h & a in the National Trophy. With Rangers pulling the plug I assume this was why Stoke rode Wimbledon in the Nat Trophy (they only scored 19 in the London leg from memory). The Harringay prog of 26 June said it was a draw from the hat and Harringay won the right to stage the trophy as NX had closed down.

Hence - no wins for Bo Petersen 1983, Andy Galvin 1985 or Billy Hamill 1996?

QUOTE (speedyguy @ Apr 23 2009, 06:26 PM) I have a list giving Andy Galvin as 1985. You quote 1988. This championship seems poorly recorded.
PS: Wikipedia gives Dave Jessup as 1983!!!! No champions after that.
Norbold's reply was:::
Well if Wikipedia says that it is definitely wrong. I even have the programme for the 1996 London Riders' Championship.
Chris Fenn's book, "Friday at Eight", also gives Bo Petersen as the LRC winner in 1983 and 1988 as the year Andy Galvin won it.

It was decided that these riders would race the following week at Hackney, to decide the championship. Bo Petersen won that race, with Tatum second and Jessup in 3rd place. Petersen then beat Jessup in a run-off to win the 1983 LRC.
