Hi John Very interesting to see Sam Marsland listed in the 46 Hammers riders.I don't remember it but I have got Sam riding in the old pre-war second division but I never thought of him riding after the war at all. It just goes to show that the old-timers didn't just fade away after 1945 after all, (it appears they just hid up from me and my dad??). One man missing - Buddy King, who rode at Norwich for either West Ham or New Cross in a Challenge match but I have not found him in any team anywhere in 46 or 47 and I cannot find him at Norwich in a second-half either) Maybe someone from "London" may throw some light on him?

I think you will find that Sam Marsland also turned up in the early part of 1947 with Wombwell in Division Three. As for Buddy King, not certain about him ever riding in a team match although he was well known around West Ham. I also seem to recall that Buddy King did ride for a team in Holland though - about 1948 or 1949. Certainly need to check on that challenge match appearance - if he did, then Buddy King should be included for a 1946 team.

On July 13 1946 in the Norwich 41 v New Cross 42 challenge match, A King replaced Phil Bishop in the New Cross team. Could this have been Buddy King (or was it Benny King?).

Yes B E 1932 & John, that is the occasion I referred to. He is listed in my dads programme as A King in the riders score chart and as B King in the heats as a replacement rider. As this was a Challenge match I always assumed it was a local Junior rider making up the numbers for Rangers until someone told me a while ago at a Bawburgh ReUnion that was not the case. It may have been Bob Womack or Phil Clarke possibly, Then came the task of trying to find out just who was A or B King. I had thought of Benny King and Herbie but discounted that possibility for no real reason, except that I thought Benny King would have been in the team to ride instead of coming in on the night as a late addition replacement and he was a Hammers rider anyhow. Herbie was up North at Middlesbrough or Newcastle so that would rule him out (we didn't have double-up tripe in Speedway then). You rode for a team and got a transfer if you wanted to ride for someone else. I have seen John Keen listed in some 2nd half results around that time on Researcher records but cant say if that is anything to do with this though.

Regarding Sam Marsland at West Ham in 1946. As far back as 1933 he was also having rides at Wimbledon.

In 1946 besides that tacit link with West Ham, Sam Marsland also rode at Middlesbrough in Division 2.
