THIS POST WAS SUBMITTED BY TUNGATE ON JULY 17 2009 AND HAS BEEN MOVED FROM THE '35 YEARS OF LEGENDS' POSTING. Administrator.
An excellent cd is the "complete a-z of post-war riders". Part One covers riders who first rode in the 1946/7/8/9 seasons and includes a write-up on every rider concerned even if he never "made it" to ride regularly for League tracks. Photo's and statistical info for each season is included and at just £9.99 it is true "Value for money" in every way. The cd has a great photo of Jack Parker on it. Part two is due soon and will cover the 1950-1959 riders. Any rider who rode in the 40s has his details completed in part 1 and riders starting in the 50s will be completed in part 2 together with updated details which have since come to the knowledge of the authors.

From the 'South London Press' Friday November 27 2009:::
A-Z OF BRITISH SPEEDWAY CD, PART ONE, 1946-1949 £9.99 (free post and packing). V M Jackson, 11 Crescent Road, Sheffield, S7 1HJ. Part One covers the 583 riders who made their post-war debuts in the 1940s. At almost 400 pages, it features a profile of each rider by Matt Jackson, year-by-year statistics by Hugh Vass and is packed with superb photos from the John Somerville collection. The disc covers every rider who made his debut in British speedway in these years. For South London fans the CD details riders who turned out for the New Cross and Wimbledon clubs in this period. It includes such greats as Wimbledon’s Norman Parker, Alec Statham and Jimmy Gibb as well as a host of lesser lights. Similarly, all the New Cross stars like Ron Johnson, Eric French, Cyril Roger and many others are featured. I browsed the CD for hours and reading about so many of the sport’s greatest rekindled many memories of happier times when speedway was a major part of South London sporting life. This is probably the most informative data available on old-time speedway riders and is an essential addition to the library of all speedway historians. JOHN HYAM

FROM THE SOUTH LONDON PRESS FRIDAY JANUARY 29 2010
A-Z OF BRITISH SPEEDWAY CD, PART TWO, THE 1950s £9.99 (free post and packing). V M Jackson, 11 Crescent Road, Sheffield, S7 1HJ. Part Two covers the 459 riders who first appeared in the 1950s, including such greats as Ove Fundin, Barry Briggs, Ivan Mauger, Ronnie Moore and Peter Craven.
After the boom years of the 1940s, speedway went into a steep decline during the following years as the number of tracks dwindled dramatically. South Londoners were stunned when New Cross closely just after the start of the 1953, although Wimbledon survived for many seasons after that. Despite the decline in tracks nationwide, the 1950s were still a fascinating period for the sport as new names began to take over from the pre-war stars who had initially dominated the sport in its post-war revival in 1946. Also, riders from New Zealand and Europe began to challenge the supremacy of the British and Australian stars. In this period, Wimbledon produced Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger, who started the decade as novices from New Zealand but soon developed into world champions. Other additions to the Dons' ranks at this time included the talented Bob Andrews. At New Cross, Ronnie Genz and Don Gray were among newcomers who went on to carve themselves respected reputations at other tracks after the Rangers folded. The second part of a series, this CD contains details of every rider to have made his team debut in th period from 1950 to 1959. Packed with biographies, statistics and images from the John Somerville collection, it is an essential addition to the collection of all speedway followers. JOHN HYAM
