Vic Duffy ran a series of teams and leagues in the East and South London area sometime around 1954-56 in a bid to keep cycle speedway active in these parts. There was some coverage for these teams and leagues in the 'Speedway Gazette' but I no longer have any copies. Is there any site member out there with a knowledge of this era of cycle speedway who might be able to revive my memories with some teams and those of riders. I seem to recall besides Vic Duffy, other riders included John Brown, Frank Enn, Paul Galea. I think one of Vic's efforts around 1955-56 may have been to revive the Welling Wings. One of the sides may have come out of a track at Admiral Street in Greenwich, and others used the then LCC track at Blackheath. I know its now 55 years or more that this all took place but it's bugging me as I try to re-establish what I like to think of as the Vic Duffy era. He certainly worked hard to try and keep cycle speedway alive in the mid 1950s.

I can't help with the original query preceding this message. The last I heard of Vic Duffy was that he was living in the Colchester area? But that would have been late 1990s or early 2000s. He was a dedicated servant of cycle speedway. Vic was also a West Ham speedway supporter and I am certain also ran a pukka-speedway training track near the old Custom House car park in about 1953 or 1954. One here for my old adversary crossed hammers to give the lowdown on?

I think that Vic Duffy's pukka-speedway training track is mentioned in a book which I think it's title is 'The History of British Speedway' or similar and its author is a Robert Bamford? Is there an update on Vic - he must be in his late 70s now?

Hi All, I'm a new member. I just joined the VCSRA and learned Vic has sadly passed away, along with some other members of my old team "East Ham Stars" These being Ernie Lamacq, Ted Walker and Johnnie Halloran, RIP fellas, good riders , good blokes. I had the privilage of being captain from circa 1952 to 1960. Track was at Cyprus Place East Ham (Beckton). I'm trying to get a message about the Poplar Penguins track, which I helped to build in 1952. It was at Poplar High Street, not Ellesmere Street or Yabley Street as has been posted on some sites. I'll catch up with it soon. Best regards, Joe Barrett

RIP Vic Duffy.
