WIMBLEDON DONS TO BATTLE FOR JOHN CEARNS CUP Looking slightly ahead; a team representing the Wimbledon Dons are set to battle it out for the John Cearns Cup on Monday 12th August at Central Park. The Dons were sadly forced out of their stadium after the 2005 season due to a high increase in rent from their landlords, a very sad end to the capital club steeped in history since the 1920’s. The Kings chairman Roger Cearns has solid links with Wimbledon, his grand-father WJ Cearns built Wimbledon Stadium in 1928 while his father John was a director for 60 years from the early ‘30s to the 1990’s. With these firm links in mind a side comprising of five riders with links to the Dons contest the John Cearns Cup. Chris Schramm (2003), Chris Mills (2002) and Andre Cross (2002-2004) all appeared in the famous Gold Star body colour at Plough Lane, while Aaron Baseby and Brendan Johnson both raced second half events during 2005. Ryan Terry-Daley was born in Hammersmith, but was brought up in New Zealand, a country with strong links for the Dons in years past. Team manager for the Dons is current Isle of Wight team manager and co-promoter Chris Hunt who was an ever present throughout 2002 and 2003. The Dons body colours are being made especially for the event and they will all be signed by the riders and sold in the bar after the meeting with all the funds going towards the riders' equipment kitty. WIMBLEDON DONS from: Andre Cross, Brendan Johnson, Aaron Baseby, Chris Schramm, Chris Mills, Ryan Terry-Daley, Shane Hazelden, Team manager: Chris Hunt

Based on information provided in regard to the Kent Kings v Wimbledon fixture on Monday last (September 2 2013) I filed this information with photo to both 'Wimbledon South London Press' and 'Wimbledon Guardian'. It may or may not be used by them in their publications today. I would be interested to know if this or any mention of the match appears in the current editions. Neither paper circulates in the area where I live. ::::The Release reads::::
KENT KINGS v WIMBLEDON PRESS RELEASE: No copy byline!!! ::::::::
Photo: Andre Cross is making a come-back for Wimbledon’s match against Kent Kings. Photo: Alexander Hyam :::::::::
EIGHT years after speedway ended at Wimbledon ended in 2005 the Dons return to action for a one-off challenge match for the Johns Cearns against Kent Kings at Central Park, Sittingbourne, on Monday (September 9). The match is to honour John Cearns who built Wimbledon Stadium in 1928. His grandson Roger Cearns is the promoter at Kent Kings. They are led by Andre Cross who rode for the Dons between 2002-05. Cross has been in retirement since 2006 but is confident he will be able to score some valuable points against Kings. Another former Dons rider in the side is Chris Schramm who had outings for them in 2002-03, and is currently with Premier League club Newcastle. A third rider with links to the Dons side is Brendan Johnson, who used to have after the meeting practice rides at Plough Lane in 2004-05. He is now with National League side Isle of Wight Crusaders. Completing the Dons side are Simon Lambert, Daniel Greenwood, Ryan Terry-Daley.and Kelsey Dugard. None of them have previously worn a Wimbledon race jacket. Lambert is the only one of the quartet to have raced at Plough Lane, when he was a member of Conference League rivals Boston in 2004 and 2005. Terry-Daley claims a unique to Wimbledon in that his father was a member of the Plough Lane track staff in the 1980s. Kelsey Dugard’s grandfather Charlie was a Wimbledon rider in 1946, while his uncles Bob and Eric rode for the Dons in the 1970s. Kelsey is the son of former Eastbourne rider Martin Dugard. Wimbledon’s team manager is Chris Hunt who was captain of Wimbledon between 2002-04 and is now in the same role with Isle of Wight Crusaders. Kent Kings are newcomers to the National League this season, but have strong side which includes the league’s leading rider Steve Boxall, who has experienced riders in David Mason, Ben Morley and Benji Compton as the main support. Because of a curfew on noise imposed by the local council, speedway starts at Central Park at 6.30pm.

An interesting comment on the Wimbledon discussion site::: :::::: Re: [wimbledonspeedway] Re: Wimbledon v Kent Kings from Mike Moseley to 1 recipient Show Details Oh dear, I knew it would be difficult to put a team together that anybody could call 'Wimbledon', but now I've seen the line-up, I definitely won't be wasting any money on what for me is a long journey (Approx 7-hours return) to watch that little lot, it'll be a massacre. Sadly Simon Lambert would now appear to be ruled out with a suspected broken ankle sustained at Ipswich last night.
I still hope that the local people will support it in large numbers though, for the good of both clubs (hopefully Wimbledon will rise from the ashes once again), but I can't justify spending a heck of a lot of money in fuel, admission and food to watch that little lot.
I do feel sorry for the people that have spent hours in putting the side together, because they were on a hiding to nothing really. I've now spoken to eleven people who still live in either Wimbledon, Raynes Park or New Malden who like me when I lived in London, NEVER missed a meeting at Plough Lane, and have taken the view that even if the sport did return to Wimbledon, they wouldn't return themselves. They've got out of the habit of going now, and have found other things to do with their time and money, and I somehow don't think they'd be alone. I wouldn't fall into that category though, and even though I now reside in West Norfolk, I would try and take in as many meetings as finances would permit, providing the team was up to scratch.

Well I suppose that if the Dons had not been stopped in 2005 there would be very few of the original team from that time still riding for us now - they would mostly have been newcomers acquired over the intervening years. It's just that we would have become used to them as they came in one by one and we would have adopted them as "ours" over the years. I am really sad that Andre will not be riding, as I'm sure we all are, but selectors have to do their job and their choices are not always popular. I remember in 2005 when we had to drop two very popular riders in order to get Grant MacDonald in the team - it was not a popular choice but it was the right one in the circumstances. I will be there on Monday, cheering for "our" team and hoping that it will help to keep the spirit of the Dons alive in the hope of one day returning the Promised Land ... or somewhere near there anyway. Richard PS. If Simon Lambert really is out injured (and I would send him my sympathy) maybe Ond will be chosen instead ?

Preview sent to Wimbledon Guardian sports desk: :::::: Wimbledon make a third bid on Monday to face Kent Kings at Sittingbourne in the John Cearns Cup. This Monday’s match was called off in mid-afternoon when a downpour made the track unfit for racing. Previously the Dons were due to race the match on August 12, but that was postponed when the home side had to restage a National League match postponed from the previous week. Wimbledon had named their team as Brendan Johnson, Danny Phillips, Chris Schramm, Ryan Terry-Daley, Kelsey Dugard, Daniel Greenwood and Lewis Blackbird. But as their side includes riders who are contracted to league teams, rearranged fixtures for their parent cubs could see late changes to that selection. The John Cearns Cup is dedicated to the man who was Wimbledon Stadium manager for 60 years from its opening in 1928. His son Roger was also a director at Wimbledon and now runs the Sittingbourne track. Racing is scheduled to start at 6.30pm because of an 8.30pm curfew on speedway at Sitingbourne. ::::::: Preview item on match by Derek Barclay: In a week when the future of Speedway back at Wimbledon may go some distance to being decided, with Merton Council listening to the various bids for changes to the famous Dog Track site on Plough Lane, it was perhaps a portent that the latest return to track of the world-famous Dons was washed out in an unseasonal downpour on Monday. The Cearnsport-owned track in Sittingbourne where the Wimledon Dons were due to take on home side the Kent Kings was under water in a way which ironically mirrored an opening day rain off in SW17 all the way back in 1928. That the motor cyle sport survived that intital disappointment to run in all of the subsequent eight decades at Wimbledon Stadium may be just the fillip needed for campaigners desperate to see the sport return to Wimbledon having last been staged at Plough Lane in 2005. There won't be a long wait for a third attempt to stage this special John Cearns Cup event (John was the Stadium Manager at Wimbledon for an amazing 60 years and his son, Roger also a former Wimbledon director, runs the Kent track) with the rearranged date being this Monday (16th. September) with a 6.30pm start time. With fixture clashes there are poised to be changes in the Dons line-up but one-time Plough Lane junior Brendan Johnson and young Kelsey Dugard, great grandson of pre-war Wimbledon-based rider Charlie and grandson of popular Don from the late 1960s, Bob Dugard are confirmed starters in the famous red and yellow race jacket.

These are the Kent Kings programme notes by Derek Barclay for the Kent Kings v Wimbledon match on Monday, September 9, 2013 and was rained off. It is possible that the same programme was used for the match held on Mobday, September 16, which Wimbledon won. ::: KENT KINGS PROGRAMME NOTES Monday, September 9, 2013 edition. By DEREK BARCLAY. I heard about Andre minutes before the deadline for the Star (though don't think they ran my piece anyhow..). There was time to revise prog notes though and they now read:Twenty-THIRTEEEN could yet be the lucky number the fans of London-based Speedway club in exile, the Wimbledon Dons have been waiting for, with recent news of a new initiative relating to their famous stadium home in SW17 giving hope for a return to the track the club graced from 1928 but were forced to vacate nearly eight years ago now. For Speedway fans who want to hear more check out www.speedwayplus.com/pdf/WeWantWimbledon.pdf Meanwhile, in order to help keep the famous Speedway name of the Dons alive on track too, Wimbledon are our visitors this evening here to Central Park to contest the John Cearns Cup. Leading the way is a Premier League star who has cause to thank the Wimbledon club for playing its part in setting him along the road to Speedway success. CHRIS SCHRAMM hails from Essex and first saw Speedway action in second halves at his home county track in Thurrock – the circuit now known as Lakeside. The Maldon-born speedster unusually actually excelled in schoolboy sport at show-jumping, before swapping horses for the raw horsepower of a 500cc motor bike! Schramm’s early team racing experience came in the Southern Counties League with David Croucher’s Southampton Saints alongside the likes of Chris Hunt and Dan Giffard, who he was later to join up with at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, although Schramm was riding when the legendary Dons returned to track in 2002 in a match up at Peterborough, it was on that occasion for his then CL side, the East of England Showground-based Thundercats, It wasn’t until the following year that he linked back up with his mentor Croucher, riding for the Dons in their Conference Trophy squad. Newcastle Diamond Schramm appeared here earlier this season in the Laurels. SIMON LAMBERT (the Laurels champion here back in July) has good memories of riding at the famous Plough Lane track. It was back in August 2004 when the then teenage rookie Lambert, riding for his home town club the Boston Barracudas, recorded his first ever away race win in league Speedway. Simon went on to become something of a Wimbledon track specialist as one of the most prolific visiting scorers to SW17 during 2004 and ’05. Wimbledon fans will be delighted to see Lambert (who has picked up many honours in the third tier since those early days) finally in the Dons’ colours this evening! And the same is true to say of a rider who appeared regularly in after the meeting sessions at Wimbledon Stadium in ‘05 - he was then a wet-behind-the-ears teen from the south-coast, but was to go onto become GB Under 18 national champion and currently rides under Hunt’s charge at the Isle of Wight: BRENDAN JOHNSON. Another former British champ is DANIEL GREENWOOD – Dan, seen here a fortnight ago with Dudley, won the Under 15s title in 2008. Riding for the first time here is another Daniel, in this case DANNY PHILLIPS – recent winner of the Northern Junior League Riders Championship, this 16-year-old former moto-crosser has recently signed up for Mildenhall. There are very few London-born riders currently plying their trade in British Speedway, our own Jack is one and so is a member of the Dons septet tonight, RYAN TERRY-DALEY. Born in Hammersmith to the west of the capital, his Dad was a ‘Starter’ at Wimbledon before emigrating to New Zealand where young RTD served his Speedway apprenticeship, with one of his mentors being a rider who began his own UK racing career at Wimbledon and went onto win SIX World titles, Ivan Mauger! Completing the line-up is remarkably a FOURTH generation Wimbledon Don! KELSEY DUGARD’s grandfather Cecil (known to the Speedway world as ‘Charlie’) Dugard rode second halves at Plough Lane pre-war before becoming a part of the Dons side in 1946. Charlie’s son Bob Dugard was then himself a Wimbledon rider between 1965 and 1970 riding in 175 British League fixtures for the Dons. Bob’s younger brother Eric Dugard (Kelsey’s great-uncle) also rode for Wimbledon in the mid-1970s. The Dugard dynasty continues with British Youth championship rider Kelsey, son of the very popular former Eastbourne rider Martin Dugard, a one-time British SGP winner. Lastly we welcome the Team Manager this evening, CHRIS HUNT – Chris was an ever-present skipper for the Dons CL side throughout 2003 and 2004 before he began management with the Iwade-based Sittingbourne club.
