An interesting in regard to West Ham Speedway history:
I am writing as a volunteer representative of East London Radio, a new not-for-profit community radio station being set up to serve the East London boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest. Our programmes are currently only available in the form of podcasts available for download for the station website - www.eastlondonradio.org.uk - but internet streaming is planned to start in the near future.
One of the station's most popular programmes is the sports programme, "Sports 'n' All", which highlights not only national and international sports, but also local "grass roots" activities such as amateur football, club rugby, athletics, cricket, etc.
East London Radio is planning a series of features for Sports 'n' All about speedway racing in East London (with particular focus on West Ham Speedway) which I have been writing. As a former West Ham supporter myself, I feel that this is a story which should be told, particularly as it has now been over forty years since the final meeting at Custom House, and almost seventeen years since speedway was last staged in East London (with the 1996 London Lions.)
We would be particularly keen to record interviews with any ex-West Ham riders or officials from the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s for use in the programme. We'd also like to hear from any ex-Hackney riders from the 1960s or early 1970s who may have ridden at Custom House. If you could help us, would you please contact our station director Ian Chambers via email at ian@eastlondonradio.org.uk , so that a suitable date could be agreed. Many thanks.
