ROCKETS SO CLOSE TO ROCKING ROBINS The “BP Mitchell” Rockets collected their second away match point of the season – and also their very first at Swindon in the top flight – in going down by an agonisingly close 48-42 score-line in Wiltshire on Thursday night. That away point could actually have been much more, as the Rockets stunned the defending league champions with 5-1s in the first two races – with Krzysztof Kasprzak and guest Michael Palm Toft romping home against Nick Morris and Adam Ellis in the opening heat, and fellow cover man Ashley Morris and Max Clegg doing the same after the second placed Zach Wajtknecht had fallen on the final lap of Heat 2 – to lead 10-2. Although the Wiltshire side hit back with a maximum of their own in Heat 6 – with Scott Nicholls hitting the deck on the fourth bend – Rye immediately retaliated with a third 5-1, this time from the returning Stuart Robson and Chris Harris, who kept Tobias Musielak at bay in the very next race, to lead 25-17. The match took a major turn when Nicholls was seemingly forced to take evasive action – ending up on the centre green! – when shut down by the Tactically nominated Morris and Batchelor in Heat 9. The race continued, however, as the two Australians pulled four points back against remaining Rocket Clegg. Morris re-appeared to partner Ellis to another 5-1 in the next race, as the Robins pulled level at 30-30. The Rockets re-took the advantage with a 4-2 from Toft and Kasprzak over Musielak in Heat 11, only for the Robins to re-pay the favour with one of their own in Heat 13 – and then sting Rye with a 5-1 in the penultimate race. Morris ended Hertfordshire hopes by gating alongside Musielak in the finale, and although Toft and Harris both worked their way past the Pole, the Dane’s tumble on the third lap led to an awarded 4-2, which at least gave the Rockets the consolation match points that their battling efforts deserved. Team Manager Peter Schroeck was understandably upbeat afterwards. “No one gave us a chance of a point beforehand, but in the end I think its fair to say that we were unlucky today and Swindon were rather lucky. They know they’ve been in a really good match. “As I said beforehand, it was so important that we made a good start in order to get ahead of the game, and we got it this time. “KK (Krzysztof Kasprzak) looked like he could go through the card early on before he hit engine problems. Scott (Nicholls) was unlucky to fall in his first ride when he hit a rut and just took off, and we really expected the race to be stopped when he ended up on the centre green in Heat 9. He certainly felt he had nowhere to go except into Nick Morris or Troy Batchelor! “Bomber had another better meeting tonight, and he changed his bike at the end. I was pleased for Robbo (Stuart Robson) as well. He was sore after an early fall, but he got back up and kept going. He fully deserved his race win. “It was good to see Max (Clegg) amongst the points. A couple of them came his way, but he was battling hard as always, and sometimes you deserve your luck. “MPT was outstanding tonight and fitted in with what we wanted to do. Our thanks, also, to Ashley Morris for his efforts as our other guest. “But overall, it was a very encouraging performance, and one we can be proud of.” “BP Mitchell” Rockets: Chris Harris 10+1, Michael Palm Toft (guest) 9+1, Krzysztof Kasprzak 7, Max Clegg 4+2, Stuart Robson 4, Scott Nicholls 4, Ashley Morris 4 (guest) Swindon: Nick Morris 14, Tobiasz Musielak 10, Troy Batchelor 9+1, Adam Ellis 6+2, Zach Wajtknecht 4+3, David Bellego 4, Anders Rowe (guest) 1.
Match points: Swindon 3 Rye House 1 The Rockets are next in SGB Premiership action on Monday, when Aaron Summers and Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen – who missed out on the Swindon trip due to SGB Championship commitments at Sheffield – will be back in the fold as the Rockets head up the A10 to tackle newly crowned British Champion Robert Lambert and King’s Lynn in the return fixture to Bank Holiday Monday’s televised victory over the Stars. Says Schroeck ahead of the meeting: “Hopefully, our result at Swindon will set the tone for Monday. We still remember Bomber’s 5 ride maximum at Lynn last season, as well as our victory there at the end of the year. Yes, it’s a new season now, but all the boys know their way around that track, so it will be all about getting stuck in from the start and getting ahead of the game the way we did at Swindon. There is no reason why we can’t get the right result. “We need to carry on from where we left off with a deserved point against the Robins, and if we can get a positive result in Norfolk, and then pick up three points at home against Belle Vue on Wednesday, everything will be working the way we want it to by pushing into the top four by the middle of next week. And we will still only be less than half way through the season, rather than chasing the Play-Offs the way we did last season.” “BP Mitchell” Rockets: Max Clegg, Chris Harris, Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen, Krzysztof Kasprzak, Scott Nicholls (captain), Stuart Robson, Aaron Summers

ROCKETS STARTLED BY LYNN Just four days on from their near miss at defending SGB Premiership champions Swindon, the “BP Mitchell” Rockets were brought back down to earth with a resounding bump in a 58-32 thumping at A10 rivals King’s Lynn on Monday night. The Hertfordshire side provided the first placed finisher in just two races, with Chris Harris the most consistent visitor in a 10+1 haul, in contrast to a fiery Stars outfit that had made light of Ty Proctor’s absence with a shoulder injury as newly crowned British Champion Robert Lambert went through the card and Michael Palm Toft and Lewis Kerr each dropped points in just a single outing. Despite an absence in the heat win department in the first four races, the Rockets hung in there at 14-10, only to be rocked by three 5-1s in the space of the next four stanzas as the score rapidly spiralled to 32-16. Scott Nicholls and Chris Harris headed home the field in Heats 9 and 10, respectively, but it was clearly too little too late, as Krzysztof Kasprzak’s exclusion for a second starting infraction of the evening in Heat 11 sealed a personal nightmare for the Pole and set up a fourth Stars maximum in Heat 11. Their fifth and sixth following in Heats 13 and 14, to give the final result its lopsided appearance. Rye House Team Manager Peter Schroeck admitted afterwards that, “That was a really tough meeting for us. They (King’s Lynn) were just too good for us, and Michael Palm Toft at reserve seemed to be everywhere we went, leaving them very strong in that department. “The track was pretty grippy, and the boys took longer to get used to it, but we can’t use that as an excuse. There were glimpses of success, but simply not enough as a team. Bomber (Chris Harris) had a good night, but K.K. (Krzysztof Kasprzak) definitely had one to forget, with bike problems at the start and things going from bad to worse. “All we can do is dust ourselves off, re-group and focus on Wednesday when we’re back on our own patch and we can put things right (against Belle Vue).” “BP Mitchell” Rockets: Chris Harris 10+1, Scott Nicholls 7+1, Nikolaj B Jakobsen 6+1, Stuart Robson 5+2, Krzysztof Kasprzak 2, Aaron Summers 2, Max Clegg 0. King’s Lynn: Michael Palm Toft 15+3, Robert Lambert 14+1 (maximum), Thomas Jorgensen 11, Lewis Kerr 10+1, Niels-Kristian Iversen 7+2, Kasper Andersen 1, Taylor Hampshire (no.8) 0, Ty Proctor R/R. Match Points: King’s Lynn 3 Rye House 0

The Rockets have the opportunity to “put things right” on Wednesday when they return to home comforts after a three week break to host 10-time top flight champions Belle Vue. It’s an intriguing prospect, with the Rockets defending a 100% home record and the Aces boasting the league’s strongest top five on paper. 2017 British Champion and 2018 Grand Prix man Craig Cook heads their charge, being joined in their heat leader ranks by current Australian national titlist Rohan Tungate and 2016 World U-21 Champion Max Fricke. The Manchester men’s middle order is equally impressive, consisting of three season Rocket Jason Garrity – who is installed as cover for the side-lined Steve Worrall – and sensational teenager Dan Bewley, who has lifted the British U-19 title, finished as runner-up in the senior event and won through to the World U-21 Final…. all in the space of the last month! What a whirlwind ride it has been for the 19 year old Cumbrian. Belle Vue are completed at reserve by parallel Berwick Bandit Jye Etheridge and Polish first year man Damian Drozdz. Despite that impressive resume, the Aces are yet to fully spark in 2018, with away points at Somerset and Leicester – both from narrow 47-43 defeats – currently outweighed by a home reverse against King’s Lynn, and Peter Schroeck is not one to dwell on individual achievements either. “Yes, Belle Vue look strong on paper, but so do we. It’s what happens on the track that matters; how you turn up on the day. The meeting is there to be raced. “The boys all know what they’ve got to do. We’re not hitting the panic button yet, but we must win at home, or we will have to look to change things. “We’re in our own back yard, and as I said earlier, it’s down to us to put things right. We know we can do it.” “BP Mitchell” Rockets: Max Clegg, Chris Harris, Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen, Krzysztof Kasprzak, Scott Nicholls (captain), Stuart Robson, Aaron Summers Belle Vue: Dan Bewley, Craig Cook, Damian Drozdz, Jai Etheridge, Max Fricke (captain), Jason Garrity, Rohan Tungate Admission:

ROCKETS DEALT LATE BLOW BY ACES The “BP Mitchell” Rockets suffered their first home defeat of the season in going down 46-44 to Belle Vue in an enthralling encounter - just as it looked like they might complete a spirited fightback from 8 points down. With Craig Cook, former Rocket Jason Garrity and reserve power-packet Damian Drozdz in fiery form, the Aces dominated early on to build a 19-11 advantage by Heat 5. It seemed odds-on the Rockets would halve the deficit when Krzysztof Kasprzak took his second win of the evening in the next race, with Aaron Summers safely tucked in behind him from the start. Visiting captain Max Fricke had other ideas, however, cutting inside his fellow Aussie coming off the final bend to hold Rye to a 4-2. That cued K.K.’s nomination as a tactical sub in Heat 7 – once a 30 minute delay to facilitate the setting sun because of visual problems for the riders heading into the third bend had subsided – and once again the Hertfordshire side initially looked on course for a 5-1, only this time for Rohan Tungate to drive between winner Nicholls and the Pole at the end of the opening lap to restrict the result to a 4-2 and make the progressive score 23-19. The Rockets then played get-out-of-jail-cards in the next two races, won respectively by Garrity and Fricke, as both Drozdz and Jye Etheridge fell when second behind their partners, before Kasprzak and Summers gave Rye renewed hope with a 5-1 against Dan Bewley and Tungate in Heat 10 to bring the score level, at 30-30. The Hoddesdon club suffered its own bad luck in the next race, however, with clear mass movement at the gate but Nicholls being penalised as the only rider actually caught by the rising tapes. His helmet peak was snagged in the process: once an acceptable part of the body, but no more – and the resultant 15 metre penalty set up Cook and Garrity for the maximum that put the Aces back in front. A lightning start from Kasprzak in Heat 13, with Nicholls rounding the previously unbeaten Cook for third spot, offered fresh hope as the deficit narrowed back to just two points, but although the 2014 World also captured the nominated race with ease from Cook and Garrity, Nicholls took a tumble at the rear of the field on the opening lap to rule out any chance of one last push by the Rockets. Rye House Team Manager Peter Schroeck was left deflated by the final sting in the tail to what had proven a night of twists and turns. “Yes, I’m feeling a bit flat. We got into it a little too late. We got it back towards the end, and were a little bit unlucky with the tapes exclusion for Scotty (Nicholls). “We were chasing the match from Heat 1. We were on the back foot straight away. I thought we would get a little bit more out of the tactical substitution; I was really hoping for a 5-1 there. I know it sounds petty, but every single point in a match like this is so important. “There were a lot of positives, however. K.K. rode really well again tonight, and we got stuck in. It was not for want of trying. We clawed it back from 8 points down, which shows the hearts of the riders. We faced a very tough Belle Vue; they were very consistent throughout their team and they’re obviously on a bit of a run at the moment. Look what they did a couple of days ago to Wolverhampton (winning at Monmore Green in the Knock-Out Cup). “I’m disappointed, obviously, because the name of the game is to win all your home matches, but we’ve put on a really good match again tonight, against very tough opposition. Belle Vue deserved their win at the end, despite that last bit of luck, but I am sure it’s going to happen for us again. You know, it’s still relatively early in the season; it’s not a case of alarm bells. We’ve got to look at a couple of things, but that will come in time. “It wasn’t meant to be tonight. The boys are all upset because they all want to win. What happened to Scotty in that last race was very unusual - he must have run over a couple of black cats today – but like I say, we’ve got to say positive because otherwise we are not going to be in the right frame of mind for the Swindon match. My approach is: turn it around, win that match and then we are getting back on track. I’ve got to concentrate on making sure the boys have their heads right, forget about this one and we just go forwards. “The season is not over; far from it. Don’t forget that there are a lot of things that we can change. We just have to sort it out next time around.” “BP Mitchell” Rockets scorers: Krzysztof Kasprzak 15 (6 rides), Chris Harris 7+1 (4), Scott Nicholls 7 (5), Aaron Summers 5+1 (4), Stuart Robson 7+1 (4), Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen 4+1 (4), Max Clegg 1 (3).
Belle Vue scorers: Craig Cook 11 (5 rides), Jason Garrity 9+3 (5 rides), Rohan Tungate 8 (4), Max Fricke 8 (4), Damian Drozdz 6+1 (5), Dan Bewley 3 (4), Jye Etheridge 1+1 (3). Match Points: Rye House 0 Belle Vue 3
