I have not seen a speedway meeting since Wimbledon closed in 2005. I now live in the Crystal Palace area of south London. That left me then basically wth nearest tracks at Rye House and Lakeside. I never was attracted to visit either - basically because they were not (a) a LOCAL CLUB and (b) the prohibitive time to get to either by public transport - up to two hours either way. It would have meant a time involvement of at least six hours to watch about 20 minutes of ACTUAL ON TRACK race happening taking place. My nearest home track I suppose is Kent Kings - but that would also involve travel time of at least two hours each way as was the case in regard to both Rye House and Lakeside. Aside from that there would be no point in travelling because there would be no LOCAL interest - just a case of watching speedway. New Cross was my LOCAL club - about a 30 minute walk from home. And the atmosphere at meetings in those heady late 1940s and 1950s with stadium capacity crowds was so different to what we have today - then a CLUB sport rather than a TEAM sport (there is a difference because of guest riders and rider replacement that operate nowadays).

We've not visited one since Rye House closed - hope they come back next year!
