Rockets Injury Update
The Silver Ski Rockets aim to have both Linus Sundstrom and Luke Bowen back in the saddle for this weekend's Knock-Out Cup quarter-final against Somerset. Sundstrom aggravated an earlier back injury when in collision with Bowen at Berwick on Saturday night, and was a late withdrawal from the match at Glasgow after feeling the full effect on Sunday morning. He has been receiving treatment from his chiropractor since then and, although still in some discomfort, plans to return for the tie.
Bowen, meanwhile, suffered shoulder muscle damage in that same tangle at Shielfield Park, and had to withdraw from the Glasgow fixture after the injury stiffened up overnight. Again, as of the time of writing, he is aiming to return for the two clashes against the Rebels.
The first leg of the tie is at the Oak Tree Arena on Friday, with the return scheduled for Hoddesdon the following night (Saturday, June 13th @ 7pm). Redcar's Ty Proctor will guest for the sidelined Robert Mear on Friday, while Birmingham's Jason Lyons, who covered in the away fixtures at Berwick and Glasgow, will deputise for the Rye No.1 in Saturday's deciding leg.
Rider-Replacement will remain in operation for the injured Joe Haines.

It's Hammer Time!
Elite League Lakeside will visit Rye House in a special Inter-League challenge match for the M25 Trophy on Saturday, October 3rd. The Hammers, who are play-off bound after finishing third in the table, plan to feature most of their Elite League team, including Adam Shields and former Rocket Stuart Robson. The Rockets, meanwhile, will draft in former Hoddesdon favourite Edward Kennett as a guest replacement for the injured Robert Mear.
This fixture replaces the originally scheduled Anglia Fours that was initially planned for that date.

Rockets Lose Points and Neath at Scunthorpe Scunthorpe 56 Rye House 38 (Premier League, Friday, April 8th 2011) A long night for the Silver Ski Rockets got even longer when they lost Chris Neath after a frightening Heat 7 tumble. The inspirational Rye captain fell directly in front of Scorpion Carl Wilkinson, who had no time for evasive action and ploughed directly into Neath. There was a lengthy delay while both riders were attended to. Neath suffered a nasty cut to his face, and also a blow to the arm which led to his withdrawal from the remainder of the meeting. He left for hospital x-rays as a precautionary measure, and at the time of writing on Friday night it is therefore unclear whether he will be able to ride in the Rockets’ next fixture at Newcastle on Sunday. Wilkinson, meanwhile, suffered a suspected broken leg, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery. There were at least some early reasons to smile in the Rockets’ camp, as Ben Morley kept Viktor Bergstrom behind him to follow home Nelson for a superb 5-1 in Heat 2. That result evened out a home maximum in the opener that also netted unbeaten star David Howe a new track record, although the Rockets had already fallen behind 21-15 by the time of Neath’s injury, were 12 behind at Heat 10, and were unable to pull much back as Tactical rides from earlier race winners Jordan Frampton and Jason Doyle could achieve only second places. That was about it for the match, although Rye’s top tandem both went on to post double figure hauls, and it proved a best night to date for Ritchie Hawkins who recovered from an early fall to post three successive second places. The Rockets will look to re-group ahead of Sunday’s tough return match at Newcastle, with Hackney Hawks taking centre stage at Hoddesdon for tomorrow’s (Saturday @ 7pm) emotional re-launch fixture against the American Touring Team. The Rockets’ skipper will instead see how he feels on Monday before taking the matter further. Either way, Neath will be sidelined with his injuries for the Rockets’ Premier League trip to Newcastle today (Sunday the 10th), with Rye House operating the Rider-Replacement facility in his absence as cover. The Rockets then have a few days’ break until their next fixture, at Newport on Friday (April 15th), before facing the Wasps in a quick-fire return at Hoddesdon the following night. Bring ‘Em ON: Newport The Silver Ski Rockets follow up Friday’s trip to Wales with a quick home return against Newport this Saturday (April 16th @ 7pm). The Welsh side may have made a sluggish start to the new campaign, but certainly made themselves known against the Rockets in the closing stages of last season, winning at Hoddesdon in the League and then fighting hard in the Young Shield Finals. They are relatively unchanged with their 2011 roster. Long-time Lakeside and Ipswich star Leigh Lanham has returned to Gwent for a third season, and is joined in the Wasps’ spearhead by the three time Canadian national champion and doubling-up Lakeside Hammer Kyle Legault. Also in the Wasps’ ranks are two fast rising Swedish stars. U-21 World Cup Silver winner Kim Nilsson impressed with 9 points at Rye House in last September’s League encounter, and followed up with a six ride maximum when the two sides met at Queensway Meadow in the Young Shield. He ultimately weighed in with a near 7 ½ point all-inclusive average. Robin Aspegren, meanwhile, debuted as late as last June, but still managed a breakthrough 6 point average – which included a paid 8 record in October’s Young Shield clash at Hoddesdon. Finally, the Wasps have just signed defending British U-21 Champion Joe Haines following an injury to Alex Davies, with the 2009 Rocket very much a part of their assault plans at Rye on Saturday. Forthcoming Fixtures at Rye House Saturday, April 16th Rockets vs Newport (Premier League) 7.00pm Saturday, April 23rd NO MEETING Monday, April 25th Rockets vs Leicester (Premier League) 2.00pm Saturday, April 30th Hackney vs Belle Vue (National League) 7.00pm :::::::::::::: ::::::::: Rockets So Close to Sparkling Against Diamonds Newcastle 50 Rye House 43 (Premier League, Sunday April 10th) Missing inspirational captain Chris Neath through injury, the Silver Ski Rockets headed into the lions’ den to face a side that has already won at Hoddesdon, since captured the Premier Shield and is one of this season’s clear League championship favourites. They emerged just a race point shy of claiming an away match point, after giving the Diamonds a real fright early on and then staging a late recovery of their own following injury to home No.1 Rene Bach. Jason Doyle outpaced Bach in the opening race, with Luke Bowen finishing ahead of Derek Sneddon – a key Newcastle hero when the Tynesiders won at Rye House – for the 4-2. Striking while the iron was hot, Nelson won Heat 2, and also claimed third spot in Heat 4 behind race-winner Jordan Frampton and Mark Lemon as the Rockets extended their advantage to 14-10. Successive drawn races – including another victory for Frampton in Heat 6 – kept the Rockets 4 points ahead, before the Byker team stepped up a gear with three maximum advantages and a 4-2 from the next four heats to swiftly elevate the score to 35-25 in their own favour. Their last 5-1 witnessed an exclusion for Frampton for bringing down Rene Bach in a collision that led to the Dane’s departure to hospital. There the Rockets’ fight-back started. Doyle won Heat 11 when nominated for double points to bag a 6-3, then Nelson and Ritchie Hawkins headed home Lubos Tomicek for the 5-1 that brought Rye back into contention at 42-39. The Hertfordshire side’s prospects looked even stronger in Heat 14, as the same pair seemed on for another maximum, only for Nelson to fall and Hawkins to suffer mechanical gremlins to gift Stuart Robson and Richie Worrall the 5-1 that built Newcastle’s lead back up to 7 points. That left the Rockets needing a heat advantage from the finale to take home a match point, but although the previously unbeaten Robson was kept at the back of the field, Mark Lemon held his nerve to lead home Doyle and Frampton and edge the home side to the three on offer. Rye House scorers: Jason Doyle 15 (6 rides, inc 6 as a TR) Luke Bowen 4+1 (5) Chris Neath R/R Ritchie Hawkins 5+2 (5) Jordan Frampton 9+1 (6) Ben Morley 0 (3) Nelson 8 (6) Newcastle scorers: Rene Bach 7 (3 rides) Derek Sneddon 6+1 (4) Lubos Tomicek 2 (4) Stuart Robson 12 (5) Mark Lemon 13 (5) Kyle Newman 4+3 (5) Richie Worrall 6+2 (4) Match points: Newcastle 3 Rye House 0 ENDS

Neath Injury
The latest word on Chris Neath is highly promising. The Silver Ski Rockets captain suffered nerve damage to his arm in a nasty smash at Scunthorpe last Friday that also left the Scorpions’ Carl Wilkinson with a broken leg, and was forced to sit out Sunday’s meeting at Newcastle. Neath now feels that he is “95% likely” to be able to ride in the Rockets’ next away fixture, which will take them to his original stamping ground of Newport this Friday.
The Wasps, who will return the favour at Hoddesdon the following night, have today announced the re-declaration of their team. British U-21 Champion Joe Haines has lost his spot after just two fixtures in favour of former Ipswich star Chris Slabon, while the injured Robin Aspegren has been replaced by fellow Swede Robin Aspegren.

Frampton Max Helps Rockets Fly to Victory at Newport Newport 37 Rye House 53 (Premier League, Friday April 15th 2011) The Silver Ski Rockets blasted to their first away victory of the new campaign, also handing winless Newport their heaviest home defeat so far. Jordan Frampton was the star performer with a 15 point maximum, but there were heroes throughout the side as the Rockets collected no less than ten of the fifteen race wins on offer. Football managers talk about “a game of two halves”. Well, this was “a meeting of three thirds” as the Rockets dominated the early stages, only for the Wasps to pull back the deficit and Rye to pull clear again in the final races. 5-1s from the pairings of Chris Neath/Ritchie Hawkins (Heat 3) and Frampton/Nelson (Heat 4) swiftly gave the Rockets an 8 point advantage, which they duly held until Heat 7, only for the Welsh side to level the score within the next four races. The final four races, however, belonged totally to the Rockets. Neath worked his way past the otherwise impressive Mark Jones to join Nelson for a 5-1 in Heat 12, then Frampton and Doyle handed out the same dosage to Leigh Lanham and Kim Nilsson. A third maximum followed – courtesy of Nelson and Hawkins against Kyle Legault – in a re-run Heat 14, and Frampton and Doyle rounded off the mauling with another win over Lanham and Nilsson in the finale. Team manager John Sampford was understandably delighted with both the result and his team’s performance. “The four match points tonight really make up for our narrow defeat at Somerset and missing out on a point in the last race at Newcastle. Jordan (Frampton) was obviously the star of the show, but Nelson, Jason (Doyle) and Chris (Neath) were not far behind, and everyone did their best to chip in with points in a real team effort. Our season really starts here.” The two sides meet again at Hoddesdon tonight (Saturday @ 7pm) in a quick-fire return. Rye House scorers: Jason Doyle 10+3 (5 rides) Luke Bowen 2 (3) Chris Neath 8+1 (4) Ritchie Hawkins 5+3 (4) Jordan Frampton 15 (5 rides, maximum) Ben Morley 0 (3) Nelson 13+1 (6) Newport scorers: Leigh Lanham 6+2 (5 rides) Robin Aspegren R/R Mark Jones 7+1 (5) Kyle Legault 4 (4) Kim Nilsson 10 (6) Anders Mellgren 4 (5) Todd Kurtz 6+2 (5) Match points: Newport 0 Rye House 4

Whodathunkit! Wasps Win at Rye House! Rye House 41 Newport 49 (Premier League, Saturday April 16th 2011) Who said that Speedway is a predictable sport? Just 24 hours earlier, the Silver Ski Rockets had swept aside the Wasps with sharp gating and a late surge in the first match between the two sides in Wales. This time, it was the Gwent side that made the final push to return home with their first victory of the season and all four match points. Although the Rockets held a 6 point lead at Heat 4, and still maintained a 25-23 margin at Heat 8, the visitors were consistently just too quick away from the starts for them to maintain that advantage. The Wasps’ gating made for some exciting racing, most particularly when Jordan Frampton surged around Kim Nilsson to win Heat 4, Jason Doyle caught Anders Mellgren on the very last bend to capture Heat 6, and the same rider somehow found a gap between Kyle Legault and the safety fence to drive off the same bend for victory in Heat 10, but to maintain those efforts into the closing stages was just too big an ask. Make no mistake about it. The Wasps were well worth this surprise victory. All of their side contributed key points at critical times, with Leigh Lanham and Kyle Legault stabilising the top-end and newcomer Anders Mellgren providing a real sting in the tail at reserve. It was Lanham and Legault who ultimately wrapped things up with a 5-1 in the last heat decider. One bright spot for the Rockets came in the performance of young Ben Morley. The 17 year old tigered throughout and deserved more than his solid paid 5 haul, holding off Kim Nilsson for third place until the very last bend of Heat 11 in a race that also saw Lanham sneak past Jordan Frampton for victory right on the line. Reserve partner Nelson, though, blew cold on this occasion having roasted the Wasps for 13+1 only the night before. Rye House scorers: Jason Doyle 10 (5 rides) Luke Bowen 6+1 (4) Ritchie Hawkins 5 (4) Chris Neath 8 (5) Jordan Frampton 7 (4) Ben Morley 4+1 (4) Nelson 1+1 (4) Newport scorers: Leigh Lanham 10+3 (5) Joe Haines R/R Mark Jones 2 (4) Kyle Legault 12 (5) Kim Nilsson 9 (5) Anders Mellgren 11+2 (6) Todd Kurtz 5+1 (5) Match points: Rye House 0 Newport 4 Bring ‘Em On: Leicester The Silverski Rockets will aim to re-group following their surprise defeat against Newport as they face home and away fixtures against new boys Leicester over the Easter weekend. There is NO meeting at Rye House on Saturday (April 23rd) because the Rockets will be fulfilling their first ever fixture at Beaumont Park, and also aiming to become the second visitors to win at the circuit following Scunthorpe’s 50-42 success. Rye House supporters planning to make the journey to the Midlands should note that the match begins at 7.30pm. The Lions will quickly return the favour when the two sides meet again at Hoddesdon on Easter Monday, with a 2pm start time. They bring with them a line-up built around a Russian spearhead. Double national champion Sergei Darkin showed his intent for next weekend by reeling off four race wins in last night’s 52-43 win over highly rated Newcastle. He has seen action on these shores before with the likes of Eastbourne, Coventry, Arena-Essex (as then was) and Poole. Darkin will be joined by fellow countryman Ilya Bondareko, who romped to paid 8 in that victory over the Diamonds, former Birmingham Brummie Richard Sweetman, who was also part of last season’s Coventry Elite League story last term, and the exciting Richard Hall, who was previously an Elite League gold winner with Peterboro in 2006. Former King’s Lynn Star Jon Oliver and 2010 New South Wales U-21 Champion Sam Masters make up the Leicester middle order, while the Lions will also be hoping for bite at reserve courtesy of former Rocket Jamie Courtney and Dane Jan Graverson, who pasted the Diamonds for 8+3. Rockets Play Fall (and General Bad Luck) Guys Leicester 56 Rye House 35 (Premier League, Saturday, April 23rd 2011) Someone in the Rye House camp must have hit a black cat while simultaneously walking under a ladder and breaking a mirror. Friday the 13th became Saturday the 23rd, as the Silver Ski Rockets’ first visit to Beaumont Park coincided with a catalogue of misfortune. The Rockets must have known it would not be their night as early as Heat 1, as Jordan Frampton and Luke Bowen took an early lead only for the Harlow Flyer to fall on the fourth bend, bringing down John Oliver in the process. Frampton was unable to repeat his rapid start in the re-run as the Lions instead posted a 4-2. Next to suffer was Nelson, who hit the deck on the second bend of Heat 2. The Aussie teenager was generally in the wars, suffering further falls in Heats 4 – when holding second place – and 10. Frampton looked to have bagged Rye’s first race victory in that fourth heat only for a fall by Richard Sweetman to cause a re-run…. which was duly won by Jan Graversen. The Rockets’ bad luck wasn’t over by a long shot. Jason Doyle led Heat 5 only to suffer a snapped primary chain on the final lap, a fate that was also to befall Jordan Frampton when nominated for double points as a Tactical Rider in the next race. Frampton’s sudden halt put paid to a certain six point win and led to the bizarre sight of partner Ben Morley slowing to a snail’s pace to allow Frampton to push home for four points ahead of him! If that wasn’t enough, Chris Neath was disqualified for tapes touching in Heat 10, while the final ignominy came when Frampton fell after crossing the finish line in the last race of the night. It didn’t help either that the Rockets were generally slower away from the gate than their Leicester counterparts – a problem that befell them in the previous week’s home defeat against Newport – but there were some crumbs of comfort. Neath, Doyle and Frampton all claimed race wins, with Neath and Doyle featuring in the races of the night when just missing out against Richard Hall and Sergey Darkin in Heats 12 and 13 respectively. The Lions, meanwhile, have certainly turned their season around following a stuttering start at home to Scunthorpe. They bested highly rated Newcastle at Beaumont Park a week ago, shocked defending champions Edinburgh in Scotland the night before this clash and were led to victory here by wonderful contributions by maximum man Sergey Darkin, Richard Hall and hot reserve Jan Graversen. The Rockets, instead, were left to reflect on a long night, with captain Chris Neath commenting that “There was a lot of misfortune that definitely contributed to the score-line, but also our starting was appalling, which didn’t help matters. It’s very frustrating at the moment, and we feel that we are riding our guts out for very little reward. “All we can do is re-group ahead of Monday’s re-match against the Lions at Rye House. It is really hard at the moment. We’ve just got to keep the faith at the moment, and keep pushing on. Without a shadow of a doubt, we need to win – and win well - on Monday. We’ll certainly be up for it.” That Easter Monday fixture at Hoddesdon starts at 2pm. Rye House scorers: Jason Doyle 7 (5 rides) Luke Bowen 3 (4) Chris Neath 7 (4) Ritchie Hawkins 4+1 (4 rides, inc 1 as a TR) Jordan Frampton 10 (5 rides, inc 4 as a TR) Ben Morley 3+2 (5) Tyson Nelson 1+1 (4) Leicester scorers: Sergey Darkin 14+1 (5 rides, maximum) John Oliver 1 (4) Iliya Bondarenko R/R Richard Hall 16+1 (6) Richard Sweetman 5+2 (5) Jamie Courtney 8+2 (4) Jan Graversen 12+1 (6) Match points: Leicester 3 Rye House 0 ENDS

Rockets Tame Lions in Easter Monday Return Rye House 54 Leicester 39 (Premier League, Monday, April 25th 2011) It had been a rough week for the Silver Ski Rockets, who had followed up a sensational away win at Newport by coming unglued against the Wasps in the return and then suffering a similar fate at Leicester on Saturday. Things were much more comfortable here against the Lions, however, as the Rockets responded to an early 8-4 deficit by powering home six successive 5-1s to effectively wrap things up as early as Heat 8, at 34-14. Leicester did salvage an element of pride by providing the race winner in five of the next six heats, pulling the differential back to 49-38 in the process, but it was Rye who rounded things off neatly with a seventh maximum in the finale. That last 5-1 was served up by Chris Neath and Jason Doyle, who jointly finished as top scorers for the day with paid 13. There were excellent hauls further downstream as well from Jordan Frampton and Luke Bowen, while Ritchie Hawkins chose the occasion for his strongest home performance to date despite a second bend fall in his final race. A productive afternoon was completed at reserve, where Nelson’s paid 9 haul included a dramatic last bend pass of Jamie Courtney for second spot in Heat 12, and fellow 17 year old Ben Morley featured in a 5-1 over Richard Hall in Heat 7. The Young Lion was also unlucky to drop a certain two points when losing a chain in his opener, and later to fall outside Jan Graversen in a battle for second place in Heat 14. Rye House captain Chris Neath summed up the result when saying, “We needed that big time. Our gating has been very poor recently, but it really came together today. We also rode together as a team again, which was vital given the fixtures we have coming up.” The skipper was alluding to next Bank Holiday Monday’s home and away clashed against East Anglian rivals Ipswich, which will be followed by a road trip to Berwick and a Knock-Out Cup tie against holders Newcastle . Rye House scorers: Jason Doyle 12+1 (5 rides) Luke Bowen 7+2 (4) Ritchie Hawkins 5+3 (4) Chris Neath 12+1 (5) Jordan Frampton 8 (4) Ben Morley 2+1 (4) Nelson 8+1 (4) Leicester scorers: Sergey Darkin 10 (5 rides) John Oliver 1 (5) Iliya Bondarenko R/R Richard Hall 7 (5) Richard Sweetman 11 (6 rides, inc 6 as a TR) Jamie Courtney 4+1 (6) Jan Graversen 6 (4 rides, inc 1 as a TR) Match points: Rye House 3 Leicester 0 Bring ‘Rm On (1): Belle Vue Colts There are not one, but two, meetings to look forward to at Rye House next Bank Holiday weekend. First off on Saturday (April 30th), the Hackney Hawks take centre stage as they go head-to-head with Belle Vue in National League action. The Hawks claimed all three match points in their home opener against Stoke at Lakeside on Good Friday, to add from a hard fought point won at King’s Lynn . The Colts, meanwhile, have ridden just once as of time of writing, routing the combined Scunthorpe-Sheffield team 60-31 to support their pre-season billing of third place in the national Speedway Star magazine. Their side is centred around 2008 NLRC runner-up Byron Bekker, 2009 British U-18 and U-15 Silver winner Kyle Howarth, and second generation rider Adam McKinna, who won the Knock-Out Cup with Newcastle last term. There is also an added kick at reserve, courtesy of 2008 British U-15 Champion Jason Garrity, who finished 6th in the recent U-21 Final. The action starts at 7pm. Bring ‘Em On (2): Ipswich Saturday’s National League focus is swiftly followed up by Premier League action on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2nd), as the Silver Ski Rockets and Ipswich tackle each other twice in a single day. The two sides have already faced off twice this season in the campaign-opening Anglia Cup, with the Witches bagging the silverware thanks to a 56-39 first leg that out-weighed a much tighter 49-41 result at Rye House. They meet first at Foxhall Heath at 2pm, then high-tail it down to Hoddesdon for the second fixture which starts at 7.45pm. Pre-season favourites for the Premier League title, the Witches have already made amends for a home defeat against Somerset by claiming four match points at Newport, hammering Workington 63-27 and easing home against highly rated Sheffield in Suffolk. Their assault team includes former King’s Lynn star Kevin Doolan, fast-rising teenagers Lasse Bjerre and Taylor Poole, plus the exciting talent that is Chris Schramm and Morten Risager, who missed the last clash at Hoddesdon due to injury but has recently posted his first ever British League maximum. Forthcoming Fixtures at Rye House Saturday, April 30th Hackney vs Belle Vue (National League) 7.00pm Monday, May 2nd Rockets vs Ipswich (Premier League) 7.45pm Saturday, May 7th Hawks vs King’s Lynn (National League) 7.00pm Saturday, May 14th Rockets vs Newcastle (Knock-Out Cup) 7.00pm ENDS

Rockets Close to Lucky Thirteen, as Bowen Crashes Out
Ipswich 49 Rye House 47 (Premier League, Monday May 2nd 2011)
The Silver Ski Rockets left Foxhall Heath on Bank Holiday Monday having gathered an unlikely match point – and come agonisingly close to stealing an even more unlikely draw – after battling back from a 13 point deficit. They also left Suffolk, however, with just six fit riders.
Trailing 47-43 heading into the last race decider, it looked as though Jordan Frampton and Jason Doyle would achieve the 5-1 needed to snatch the tie, only for Lasse Bjerre to save the Witches’ blushes with a last bend surge inside Doyle.
Thoughts of a positive result were far from the Rockets’ minds earlier on in the day. Although Jason Doyle and Luke Bowen – replacing Nelson following a tapes infringement – hit the front in Heat 1, the Harlow Flyer was picked off by both Kevin Doolan and Taylor Poole as the home side escaped with a 3-3. Bowen’s problems were just beginning, however. Re-appearing in the next race, he clipped partner Ben Morley’s rear wheel when picking up extra drive heading out of the second bend, sending both riders to the deck and Bowen out of the meeting. It was initially thought that the Harlow Flyer had suffered only severe bruising, but later x-rays confirmed a broken L1 vertebra which will send Bowen to the sidelines.
With the Witches consistently quicker out of the starts, a score-line of 38-25 at Heat 10 looked decisive, only for the Rockets to find sudden inspiration in the closing stages. A fourth bend mistake by Chris Schramm allowed Nelson through to join the Tactically nominated Jason Doyle for an 8-1 in Heat 11 to close the gap to 39-33.
After the Witches had responded with a 4-2 of their own, Doyle produced another lightning start to win Heat 13. More importantly, his partner Jordan Frampton wove his way inside third-placed Schramm on the first bend of the final lap, and then caught Doolan right on the line to claim the 5-1.
The Witches’ Chris Mills will want to forget Heat 14, as first a tapes exclusion and subsequent 15 metre handicap and then a fall while trying to pass Ben Morley ensured a share of the spoils for Rye in the penultimate race. Fortunately for the home side, Bjerre delivered last bend heroics to keep his side in front.
Jordan Frampton and Jason Doyle carried most of the Rockets’ workload, registering all six of their race wins and 30 of their 47 points. The rest of the side chipped in with additional points, with Chris Neath featuring in an exciting Heat 10 when re-passing Poole for second place and Nelson in that all-important 8-1. The Witches, meanwhile, fielded six different race winners, and all seven of their side were paid for at least one success, and will wonder how they let a match point slip.
Rye House scorers:

Rockets Outpace Witches in Return, But Lose Doyle
Rye House 45 Ipswich 34 (match abandoned at Heat 13 – result stands) (Premier League, Monday May 2nd 2011)
The Silver Ski Rockets made up for their narrow loss earlier in the day by securing all three match points against their East Anglian rivals in the evening’s return fixture. The meeting was, however, over-shadowed by two unfortunate injuries, the second of which led to its abandonment.
The first stoppage came when Witches’ Morten Risager over-cooked the fourth bend while leading Heat 7 and snared into the safety fence. A 35 minute delay ensued before the Dane was taken to hospital with a serious hand injury. Six races later, the Rockets’ Jason Doyle fell on the same bend when chasing Chris Schramm for third place and suffered a badly dislocated shoulder. With the Aussie in extreme discomfort, the paramedic recommended immediate transport to hospital in the ambulance. Given that the time had now passed 10 o’clock and there would be an indeterminate delay until a replacement vehicle would arrive, the referee had little alternative but to call a halt to the proceedings, although the result will stand.
While the premature conclusion was unsatisfying, the racing that preceded it was full of guts and excitement, starting as early as the opening race when Nelson held off visiting No.1 Kevin Doolan by half a wheel in the dash for third place. There were also excellent examples of team riding when Chris Neath shepherded partner Ritchie Hawkins home for a 5-1 over Chris Schramm in Heat 9, and Hawkins repaid the compliment by keeping Jerran Hart behind both himself and race-winner Ben Morley in Heat 12.
Elsewhere, Jordan Frampton completed an excellent Bank Holiday with a four ride maximum, and Chris Neath was unbeaten in his three outings.
So the Rockets’ topsy-turvy season took an upswing with these three match points and the earlier squeaker at Ipswich – but at what cost? With Doyle looking set to join Luke Bowen (broken L1 vertebrae) on the sidelines, it could be a strange looking Rye House side that ventures north for matches at Berwick and Glasgow this coming weekend.

Bank Holiday Horror For Hawks
Scunthorpe-Sheffield 66 Hackney 24 (National League, Monday May 2nd 2011)
The Hawks experienced a real night to forget as they were taken apart by a very strong combined Scunthorpe-Sheffield team in Lincolnshire on Bank Holiday Monday. The home side provided the race winner in fourteen of the fifteen heats, racking up no less than eight 5-1s in the process, and would have won by an even bigger margin had not Ashley Birks stopped and fallen in separate races – each time while leading – and Greg Blair fallen in the final race when holding second.
Barrie Evans provided the Hawks’ one moment to smile with a race win in Heat 13.
Team manager Neil Vatcher was the first to admit that “We are all extremely disappointed with this result. We were simply beaten by a much better side that knew the best way around its own track.
“There are four or five riders with Premier League experience in their side, and it showed tonight. We really missed Ben Morley (who was committed to Rye House’s matches against Ipswich), although there were pluses from Marc Owen’s 100% effort and the fact that Brandon Freemantle, although scoreless, was on the pace against very good riders.
“We’ll treat tonight as a learning experience on a bigger track, and one that will hopefully provide the re-focus for Saturday’s match against King’s Lynn.”
Hackney scorers:
Barrie Evans 7 (5 rides, inc 1 as a TR) Ben Morley R/R David Mason 4 (5) Ben Hopwood 3 (4) Marc Owen 5+1 (5 rides, inc 1 as a TR) Brandon Freemantle 0 (5) Shane Hazelden 6 (6)
Scunthorpe-Sheffield scorers:
Greg Blair 11 (5 rides) Adam Wrathall 5+2 (4) Steve Worrall 12+3 (5 rides, max) Gary Irving 11+1 (4 rides, max) Ashley Birks 5+1 (4) Stefan Nielsen 8+2 (4) Richie Worrall 12 (4 rides, max)
Match points: Scunthorpe-Sheffield 3 Hackney 0
Bring ‘Em On: King’s Lynn Young Stars
The Silver Ski Rockets head north this weekend to face Berwick (Saturday, May 7th) and Glasgow (Sunday), but there is still action at Rye House this Saturday night as the Hackney Hawks will aim to rebound from their bad day at the office against Scunthorpe-Sheffield with the National League visit of King’s Lynn. The Young Stars just edged the Hawks 47-45 when the two sides met at the Norfolk Arena on April 13th, and have since gone on to draw with Mildenhall and take a match point away from their trip to Scunthorpe after a tense 48-42 result.
Arriving with them on Saturday are the likes of newly crowned Bronze Helmet holder Darren Mallett, former Raider and current doubling-up Plymouth Devil James Cockle and Jake Knight, who blasted paid 18 in the first match between the teams, although 13 at Scunthorpe on Easter Monday wasn’t bad either!
Waiting for them will be former League Riders Champions Barrie Evans and David Mason, British U-21 Finalists Marc Owen and Shane Hazelden, 2009 Finalist Ben Hopwood and reigning British U-15 Champion Brandon Freemantle.
The action starts at 7pm.
Forthcoming Fixtures at Rye House
Saturday, May 7th Hawks vs King’s Lynn (National League) 7.00pm
Saturday, May 14th Rockets vs Newcastle (Knock-Out Cup) 7.00pm
Saturday, May 21st Rockets vs Somerset (Premier League) 7.00pm

Rockets Get Burned at Ashfield Glasgow 54 Rye House 36 (Premier League, Sunday May 8th 2011) The Silver Ski Rockets’ long haul to Ashfield proved an unrewarding one, as a strong second half surge saw the Tigers claim all three match points. The Rockets held their hosts to a tight 27-21 score-line at Heat 8 – and that margin might well have been tighter but for the controversial exclusion of Nelson in Heat 6 – and still had hopes of a fight-back despite a 5-1 from Christian Henry and James Grieves in Heat 9. Unfortunately, neither of their Tactical Rides proved successful as, firstly, Chris Neath was clamped down on the first bend of Heat 10 and then Jordan Frampton ground to a halt in the following race. On the positive side, Ritchie Hawkins recovered from a poor start to reel off two wins and 8 points from his final three outings, while Jordan Frampton also enjoyed two victories and Jason Doyle and Chris Neath each posted further wins. Nelson worked hard throughout a long evening, while Ben Morley battled hard against former Grand Prix star Joe Screen in his opening ride, but was unable to break his duck. Team Manager John Sampford summed up the Rockets’ efforts afterwards. “We didn’t ride badly against strong opposition, but whatever luck was going was bad – and it was ours. We’re convinced that there was strong contact from Joe Screen when Nelson went down in Heat 6, and we also felt that Theo Pijper was encroaching on Chris’ gate in Heat 10. He came right across Chris from the start, and that put paid to double points from that Tactical ride. Finally, Jordan’s cut-out came adrift in the very next race when he was also on a Tactical nomination. There was just no way back from there. “The big plus, though, was Ritchie Hawkins, who gained so much in confidence after winning Heat 8 and just never looked back in his remaining rides. Explaining the Rockets’ sudden change of riding order after originally targeting Ashley Birks as a reserve guest for Luke Bowen, “We received new Green Sheets (team averages) late on Friday, which meant that Nelson has dropped back down to reserve, Luke has moved back into the main body of the team and Jordan Frampton is now at No.1. Talking of Bowen, what is the latest word on his injury? “Luke is seeing Brian Simpson at the Physiotherapy Clinic in Ipswich tomorrow (Monday). The current indications are that his vertebrae injury may well be a pre-existing one, in which case he is likely to be back in action much sooner than we originally estimated. But I don’t want to put a specific timescale on his return at this point. “It’s a long way home from Glasgow, but we’ve now got the best part of a week to re-group for our Cup tie against Newcastle next weekend. It’s another competition, and another day.” Rye House scorers: Jordan Frampton 8 (5 rides, inc 0 as a TR) Luke Bowen R/R Ritchie Hawkins 9 (5) Chris Neath 5 (4 rides. inc 0 as a TR) Jason Doyle 10+1 (5) Ben Morley 0 (4) Tyson Nelson 4 (7) Glasgow scorers: Joe Screen 8 (4 rides) Theo Pijper 7 (4) Christian Henry 9 (4) James Grieves 6+2 (4) Josh Gracjzonek 10+1 (5) Nick Morris 9+2 (5) Michal Rajkowski 5+2 (4) Match points: Glasgow 3 Rye House 0 Bring ‘Em On: Newcastle There’s a change of focus next weekend, as the Silver Ski Rockets divert their attention from the Premier League to the Knock-Out Cup. Their opening round opponents are current Cup holders Newcastle, with the first leg scheduled for Hoddesdon on Saturday (May 14th @ 7pm) and the return quickly following up at Byker the next evening. The Diamonds snatched a 44-43 victory – thanks to a last race 5-1 – in their League visit in April, also besting the Rockets 50-43 in the return at Brough Park eight days later after withstanding a dramatic Rye fight-back for the final match point. Their riding roster has radically changed since then, however, with original No.1 Rene Bach now out for the season with a broken leg sustained in that second fixture and Mark Lemon currently ruled out of action with a broken collarbone. In addition to guest options for the sidelined Lemon, the Diamonds have added in 5-time Slovenian Champion and former Grand Prix competitor Matej Ferjan and 21 year old Dane Claes Nedermark, who was originally earmarked pre-season for Plymouth but has now replaced Lubos Tomicek in the Newcastle side. Already waiting for their new team mates are Speedway’s favourite Mackem Stuart Robson, Derek Sneddon (who was a key factor in the Diamonds’ League win at Rye House), World U-21 competitor Kyle Newman and the fast-emerging Ritchie Worrall. Forthcoming Fixtures at Rye House Saturday, May 14th Rockets vs Newcastle (Knock-Out Cup) 7.00pm Saturday, May 21st Rockets vs Somerset (Premier League) 7.00pm Saturday, May 28th NO MEETING AT RYE HOUSE Monday, May 30th Rockets vs Workington (Premier League) 2.00pm ENDS

Monday May 9 2011:
Bowen 747 OKed to Fly Following Luke Bowen’s visit to Brian Simpson at the Physiotherapy Clinic in Ipswich today (Monday), he has been cleared to ride for the Silver Ski Rockets in this Saturday’s Knock-Out Cup tie against holders Newcastle.
Although still in some discomfort, the Harlow Flyer is downplaying this factor in his determination to get back into action, saying with his typical combination of tenacity and humour, “I ride so often when I’m in pain that, relatively speaking, this will seem like a walk in the park.” Bowen’s return will bring the Rockets back to full riding strength following Jason Doyle’s earlier comeback from a dislocated shoulder.
The Diamonds, meanwhile, are drafting in Rye track specialist Leigh Lanham as their guest for injured No.1 Mark Lemon, with the former Lakeside star taking his place alongside new signings Claes Nedermark and Matej Ferjan – plus, of course, former Rockets hero Stuart Robson. ENDS

Boxall Ready to Return We are delighted to report that following the arm injury he sustained on the eve of the 2011 campaign, Steve Boxall is now finally in a position to join the Silver Ski Rockets’ team. He will take his first rides in the Rockets’ Knock-Out Cup match away at Newcastle on Sunday and then make his home debut in the Premier League fixture against top of the table Somerset the following Saturday (May 21st). Ironically, both the Diamonds and the Rebels are in Boxall’s portfolio of former teams, falling into what he himself would admit were “wilderness years” of 2009 and 2010, although both should see a rather different proposition lining up against them in 2011. Having originally looked very quick during the team’s initial pre-season practice, Boxall will have a lengthy private practice session at Rye House today to help shake off the cobwebs of the last few weeks. Promoter Len Silver is delighted to see him finally return to his original stamping ground after a three year absence. Boxall had previously captured the Conference League Riders Championship as a 2005 Raider, also marching on to the World U-21 Semi-Finals, was voted the Rockets’ Rider of the Year in 2006 and was an important cog in Rye’s 2007 Premier League Championship machine.
His return also means that this Saturday’s (May 14th @ 7pm) KO Cup first leg tie at home to the Diamonds will be the final fixture for stand-in Rocket Jason Doyle. While sad to lose Doyle’s services, Len Silver reiterated that “Jason was always a temporary replacement until Steve was fit again and received clearance to ride, and was signed on that basis. As soon as I got the news of Steve’s clearance, Jason was the first person I spoke to, and he fully understood the situation. We truly appreciate all of his efforts for the Rockets. “We are also totally delighted to finally get Steve back into the fold. You have no idea just how pleased I was to get the call about his clearance; I was ready to hold a party! Steve is fully determined to make up for the lost time, not only of the last few weeks, but also, in fairness, the last few seasons. I think you will see a very different and a very exciting Steve Boxall out there.”

Friday the 13th Proves Just That Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the competitors – including Rye House captain Chris Neath – involved in the British Championship Semi-Final at Scunthorpe. Rain which began just one hour before the scheduled start time continued for two, forcing the postponement of the meeting. The event will now be staged next Friday, May the 20th. Silver Ski Rockets Jordan Frampton, Luke Bowen and Ritchie Hawkins will be part of the field involved in the other Semi-Final at Sheffield the night before. The top seven finishers in each Semi, together with two nominated Wildcard riders, will progress to the British Final at Wolverhampton on June 6th, with the national title plus a Wildcard spot at the Cardiff Grand Prix up for grabs at that event.
