I have been to Catford in 1965 and watched dog racing including hurdles. One of the races was billed as the longest race in the world, for greyhounds. Was this the Catford that had Speedway? The Stadium then was very nice.

The Stadium then was very nice. It was indeed the greyhound stadium! Situated in Adenmore Road, SE6, near Catford Bridge railway station and Ladywell Recreation ground. The track was billed in 1934 and 1935 as 'the Ascot of Speedway.' It was promoted by Tom Bradbury-Pratt. No results are known but they may have been carried in local newspapers like the 'Lewisham Borough News,' 'Kentish Mercury' or the 'South London Press.' I think some sort of speedway demonstration took place there about 10 years ago. The stadium closed some five or six years ago.

I saw from it the devastation and demolition of this once top class stadium. Shame on the GRA!!

The new-look 'Speedway Researcher' site says this about speedway in Catford: "The South London borough of Catford had two circuits, both lasting only a short time, and both within a couple of years of each other. In 1932 meetings were held at the Catford Cricket Gorund with the Greyhound Stadium in Adenmore Road also staging open licence racing two years later." I tend to agree with this site though in that there was also speedway and midget cars at the greyhound stadium in 1935. I read an article in "The Mercury" to this effect about eight years ago but have long lost the cutting I used to have about this. It named Phil Bishop as one of the regular riders at the 1934 and 1935 meetings."
