'Once A Jolly Swagman', action shots at New Cross in 1948, starring Dirk Bogarde, Bonar Colleano and Bill Owen, was THE speedway film. The stuntmen speedway riders included Jack Cooley and Ron Howes. The nicknam of the team in the film was 'The Cobras.'

Besides Jack Cooley and Ron Howes, what other speedway riders did the action racing for the film. There must have been more than two of them surely.

Someone once told me Howdy Byford made "a few bob" for working on the film. Doing what he did not say and I cannot say if it was true.

Yes, I enjoy that film though I've not watched it for a few months.
Whilst it was good to see the New Cross track it was certainly not good to see the St John Ambulance men seemingly rushing headlong onto the track whilst the riders were still riding at some speed.
I assure you as a former St John man at Hyde Road that such a stupid action would not happen. By doing so the men would be putting themselves and the riders in danger.

I believe this film is now available either as a download or as a DVD. Does anyone have any answer for me please.

I found this link on the oldtime site and it shows how great New Cross was in 1948. It's stuff from the film. > A great memory of how New Cross looked. > www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCP9M5o3G8A>

'ONCE A JOLLY SWAGMAN" filmed at dear old New Cross in 1948 had an ITV screening about a week ago. It was great to catch a look at the dear old stadium - which closed to speedway in 1963. Even so, from what I saw in the film even at that time it was beginning to show its age. The film: I enjoyed threading scenes - I think the actual riders were Ron Howes, Jack Cooley, Vic Goodden and Bill Weston. But the storyline itself - as I saw it - cracked and groaned. Did anyone else see the film? I would like to see other comments abut it - and apologise if my view of it may appear rather jaded.
