Is it right that in the 1970s that the stock cars used the shale speedway straights but had extended tarmac bends. And that the speedway had separate shale bends inside the stock car tarmac bends.

The track was as described until 1991 when speedway ended at Plough Lane and a new tarmac stock car circuit was laid inside the greyhound track. When speedway came back in 2002 the speedway shale surface was laid then lifted after meetings on the tarmac but tha caused problems. A new very small speedway was laid inside the stock car oval but when speedway again ended in 2005 it was again all tarmacked over. The present stadium owners the GRA are not known to be keen for a return by the bikes.

I remember sitting on a boat in the Mediteranean, having lunch, and finding that the couple sitting opposite me were Coventry supporters. They said how sorry they were that Wimbledon had shut down. I told them it was just a rumour and we had been assured it would survive the season. To my dismay they explained that the track had even been tarmaced over! A phone call to my nephew who worked at the Plough Lane stadium verified that my speedway was no more. The track was tarmaced so there would be no way back for any 'save-our-speedway' movement. I had spent 30 years following the Dons home and away and this left me very dissillusioned with the sport. I eventually began to go to Hackney, then London .. followed by a few years at Arena Essex but I just cannot get attached to another team after the Don's. I now live in the Midlands and go to P'boro, Coventry and Birmingham but do not feel as though I belong at any of these clubs. I suppose Wimbledon did have a long run so I should think myself lucky. I lived about 20 min walk away .. and just miss the place so much. (Jim Tebby was my favourite ...well ..... after RONNIE MOORE !!!)

At the moment it looks a certainty that, following the loss of speedway, stock car racing will close at Wimbledon Stadium in March 2017.
