I seem to recall a Johnnie Hoskins stunt at New Cross with a "Russian' name Igor Baranov who was a sailor with the 'Red Herring Fleet'. It must have been about 1960. Anyone remember this bit of JSH fun.

This rider did race under his own name later on for a Provincial League club but the trouble is I cannot remember the track or his name.

Anyone remember this bit of JSH fun. Igor Baranov was not a Russian but an English junior, as explained above. The sad fact is, nobody seems to know who he really was.

This is from speedwayplus in an interview with Reg Fearman, ex-West Ham rider and later a promoter: "Tell us about the mysterious 'Igor Baranov' "Igor Baranov (John Jones), a Scot, was his own publicist. He invented the name and his immediate past. Did he really 'jump ship from a fishing trawler' off Scotland? He did it all to get second half rides wherever he could. It was good, harmless publicity and made a good press talking point, with this 'Russian' having trials in the second half of the programme. He played the part well, never speaking, only some gobbly-gook to his girl friend who was his 'interpreter'. He would arrive at a speedway in a black 1950's Austin Sheerline with his copper and chrome racing machine strapped on the back. He never made the grade and turned his skills to the wrestling arenas of Britain and the continent. Of course, it was many years later that I learned the truth as described above." However, I am sure that Igor Baranov was not really Jack Jones but was someone else - Englishwise that is. He's certainly one of the sport's mystery men, and I don't think he turned wrestler either! That looks like confusion on Fearman's part, probably with pre-war Canadian Eddie 'Flash' Barker (West Ham and Crystal Palace 1938-39) who changed from wrestling to speedway pre-war, but after the war returned to wrestling in the UK, Canada and USA.

Gorka, it is in my speedway collection. i do not believe he was riding in the match most likely trying to get a ride. It is either 60 or 61.
As stated above he was not Russian just an English guy who pretended to be Russian!

Do you have any idea of the date when this advert was placed in 'Speedway Star'?

Do you have any idea of the date when this advert was placed in 'Speedway Star'? This is not "Speedway Star", this "Speedway World", 1961. Later, I will specify the month and day.

Look for "Speedway Star" for February 9, 1967.

And where is this Stoke program? Any chance of a scan of the Stoke programme showing the name Igor Baranov? We must look for a program with British qualifications Individual Speedway World Championship, Stoke, June 3, 1961.
