Just been reading the weekly newsletter from the BSPA with a round up of what's going on. I was stuck by a comment from LAKESIDE (my team) promoter Jon Cook stating he is convinced his side can keep their focus throughout the coming weeks as they revert to fortnightly racing now that there are breaks for the GP rounds.
Now I am a great lover of the GP, never thought I would like the format having seen the Wembley finals but have been converted to the extent that I have a couple of seasons worth of Eurosport coverage on the Virgin Tivo box to watch. I appreciate that British speedway has to contend with Sweden and Polish leagues but fortnightly racing - really?
Part of the beauty of following speedway was spending a couple of nights a week at West Ham, Hackney or Wimbledon and it was a dry week if you only got one meeting in a week. Now with the demise of London tracks and increased costs a weekly meeting would be just about OK but fortnightly is spreading things a bit thin. I do not have the answer (suggestions gratefully received) but perhaps opening the raceway to Premier or National League sides for Challenge matches might offer more regular meetings and give the young riders a bit more experience so that we can build the sport again.
