When West Ham signed the Norwegian star Basse Hveem in 1953, publicity claimed that he would be the first rider to lap at more than 50mph on the Custom House track. Did Basse achieve this feat?

Basse Hveem certainly showed everyone the fastest way round the Firs Stadium when West Ham visited Norwich Stars for a National Trophy match in that season. And he was only listed as a reserve for the meeting as well.

Basse Hveem certainly showed everyone the fastest way round the Firs Stadium when West Ham visited Norwich Stars for a National Trophy match in that season. And he was only listed as a reserve for the meeting as well. It was July 4 1953. Norwich won 71-37 and 120-96 on agg. Basse Hveem scored 15 points for West Ham from his first five rides then had ef in nominated heat when out with Howdy Byford against Norwich's Billy Bales and Aub Lawson. Basse set the match's fastest time of 71.8secs in heat 7. Surely Basse must rate along with the Hammers all-time great riders? Pity he did not stay longer at Custom House or in British racing. I wonder why?

That brings it all back, The match result is immeterial as the performance was magic. I think the Control Board gave Basse a certain limit to the time he was allowed to be in the Hammers team for. It is a pity it is not nowadays as he could have come over for as long as he liked. Unfortunately he will not be in Hammers greats due to the short time he was here I think

Accordig to 'Speedway in London' by Norman Jacobs, Basse Hveem rode four matches for West Ham in 1953 and was then injured missing the rest of the season.

In 1952, Basse Hveem (Norway) was the continental reserve for the World Championship at Wembley but did not get a ride.
