Trujillo 1,jpg[/img] This guy was around Wimbledon from 1936 to 1938 but never rode in the Dons team. he did though ride in the USA team that beat England in a test match at Plough Lane in 1937. His name is Manuel Trujillo and he came from Texas. Some experts reckon he was speedway's most spectacular ever legtrailer. Attachments:

My Dad would have agreed with that description as he told me about Trujillo. I seem to remember him saying he was a Mexican though. My Dad said he was a cross between Max Grosskreutz and Bert Spencer when it came to leg trailing. Unfortunately I never saw Manuel or Max in live action but if he was anything like Bert he was really a great sight. Trujillo rode in the U S A touring team on second division tracks in 1937. I suppose he may have been something to do with Putt Mossman as the Americans all seemed to be, with the exception of the Milnes and Lammy and some other lesser lights

I believe Manuel Trujillo played a vital role in the USA's 57-51 defeat of England in the first international between the two countries at Wimbledon in 1937. Towards the end England were winning but Trujillo managed a couple of crucial places to back his heat leader Cordy Milne to give USA their win. I am trying to find more details of what he actually achieved.

This is what happened in the closing stages of the 1937 England v USA international at Wimbledon. In the closing stages of the match, England led 43-41 at heat 14. In a restarted heat 15 in which Geoff Pymar IEngland) fell and was replaced by Tommy Croombs, the USA took a 4-2 with Cordy Milne (USA) winning from Croombs, while Trujillo held off Jack Parker for third place to level the scores 45-45, a crucial stage for the match. In heat 16 Wilbur Lamoreaux and Byrd McKinney scored a 4-2 for the USA over Bill Kitchen and Ginger Lees to take the lead 49-47. The 17th heat was drawn 3-3, Jack Milne (USA) beating England’s Parker and Croombs with USA’s Pete Colman to keep the Americans ahead 52-50. It was all down to a last race decider with England needing a 5-1 to snatch the win. A4-2 would have been enough for England to draw 54-54. Instead, Cordy Milne and Trujillo stormed home with a 5-1 over Joe Abbott and Frank Charles to give the USA a 57-51 success.
