Front row: Ken Monk, John Applegate, Len Applegate, Jim Tebby. There's some names here from my best forgotten youth!!! Jimmy Squibb - a Harringay rider and a big name also at Southampton, New Cross and Eastbourne. Fred Pawson, also with Poole (?) and a younger brother of Crystal Palace and Eastbourne rider Ernie Pawson. Stan Clark, a 1960s rider and promoter with Maury McDermott and Al Holliday at Eastbourne. West Ham juniors Ray Terry and Jim Chalkley. Jim Gleed, a big star at California-in-England. Ken Monk a good Harringay rider. Jonnny Applegate at Rayleigh. Jim Tebby, best known in London for so many dedicated seasons with Wimbledon...with dad Stan usually in tow as his mechanic. Jack Knight, who also had a spell at Wimbledon. The only two who beat me are Jim Purdy and Len Applegate. And all these speedway aspirants were being guided by that great old-timer Wal Phillips.

Hello.....I am new on here as I am a friend of Jim Purdy. He still rides vintage motorbikes but only rode speedway from 1949 to 1953. Does anybody have any other photos of him or info? I have just found this pic and I can't wait to show him. He is a great guy.

Hello I am Jim Gleed just seen a picture of myself ...good memories of all the lads I remember you Jimmy Gleed when you rode in the Southern Area League in the 1950s for the old California team. I have also seen you but never spoken to you at some of the annual California reunions. Are you going to the event for the 2016 season? Am I correct that after California closed you also rode for Aldershot and at Poole?

1952 Harringay trainee and later a member of the Southern Area League side California in the mid-1950s, Jimmy Gleed is reunited with his old bike at the 2009 California Reunion.Attachments:

I understand that he had rides at both Rye House and Wimbledon, probably in the early 1960s. Unfortunately Jack Knight died in a road accident in 1966.
