George Newton, like Tommy Farndon, started at Crystal Palace and moved with them to New Cross in 1934. Ilness forced him out of the sport at 1938, but he staged a New Cross return in 1948, again being hit by ilness. Subsequently, Newton rode for Walthamstow, Fleetwood and St Austell and was also at one-time team manager at Bristol. He was one of speedway's most spectacular legtrail riders. Just one puzzle - whose colours is he wearing in this excellent painting by John Proud? A painting by John Proud of George Newton.
