I was a fan of Wimbledon, back as far as 1946. I think it was one shilling and threepence for adults and ninepence for us kids to get in. It was all so thrilling in those days. Dick Harris was my hero, and I remember seeing him nurse home Reg Trott for a 5-1 win over Vic Duggan at Wimbledon, and unbelievably he did the same thing a few weeks later at Harringay. I like to look at the web site to find out about the riders of those days - Split Waterman, Aub Lawson, Ron Johnson, Bill Longley, Tommy Price, Bill Kitchen, Oliver Hart and so on. Georgie Newton held the track record at Wimbledon, he rode again for New Cross for a short time in the forties. I was at New Cross one Wednesday when they were filming crowd scenes for "Once A Jolly Swagman" starring Bill Owen ("Compo"). I followed speedway avidly until 1952, when I got called up for National Service. I cannot think why I did not get back into the sport after that. I could talk about the post-war speedway for ages!!! Best wishes George Miles.

I followed Wimbledon in the 80s and of course they moved to my local track and became the Eastbourne Dons. It is a great shame Plough Lane was lost to speedway.
