Pete Rogers, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, was a regular starter and winner in stock bike races at Wimbledon in the late 1950s. Rogers, seen on a speedway bike at an annual California-in-England reunion, also rode speedway at Aldershot, Eastbourne and California-In-England. He was also a member of the group who competed in Northern France in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Interest if you have more details about the Northern France trip. Always a puzzle why a country like France never seems to have caught the speedway bug - suspect down the cycling.

Thanks for the Post speedwayisking. I am 'dashing out' now but will come back to you later. Quite a few London area-based riders raced for Vicor Boston in France over the years. Here's an item I have just found - I hope the Link works! More later. www.flickr.com/photos/76809975@N00/423357313

Riders from the London area who rode in Northern France for the Victor Boston Troupe between 1952 and the late 1960s-early 1970s included Pete Rogers, Bob Warner, Geoff Harris, Bill Pittingale. Riders from the Home Counties nearest to London included George Bason (ex-Wimbledon and West Ham) and grass tracker Stan Tebby who also rode at the old California-in-England track and in handicap events at Harringay in the 1954-55 period. Other riders who raced for the group in the 1950s included Wee Bill McGregor and Peter Gay. Two other members of the group were Alberto Sirvan from Spain and Claude Boston France. Other riders came from various parts of the UK and Australian rider Ray Liston (early 1960s). There is a possibility that pre-war French riders Charles Bellisent and Jean Landru were may also have competed in some meetings for the group. Most of the tracks where the group competed were also used for athletics and similar sports events. The meetings were NOT sanctioned by any federation in France. Besides staging speedway races, the meetings were supported by stunt events staged by the promoter Victor Boston and his wife and their son Claude Boston. Promoter Victor Boston's speedway promoting experience was from his days working for the group that staged speedway at the Buffalo Stadium in France. His involvement there was from 1937-39 then again in the immediate post-war years from 1946-52.

The name Tebby struck a chord as I saw him a good few times at West ham and Hackney in the late 60's and early 70's riding for Newport. The other names a little before my time.A quick 'google' and found the article on the Speedway Plus website. Rough tracks in France - saw a few here as well! Interesting stuff and thanks for the update.
