How many heats were the early league matches from 1929 and in what way did the formats change up to September 1939.
Also, how many heats were there for National Trophy and London Cup matches up to September 1939.

I would advise you to take a look at the Speedway Researcher site for pre-war systems. National Trophy 1937 at Norwich was on the League match formula. But we were not Division One so I don't know if that was different. Later in 1938 the matches were 18 heat and the Winners of the Second Division Final met a Division One team in the next round. Norwich won the right to meet Harringay & only one leg @ Norwich was the rule. Having won that it was v Wembley next with 2x18 heats. After a rain-off at Wembley the rerum was over 9 heats only at Wembley with 18 @ Norwich. Needless to say the Stars lost and Wembley went into the s/f
