The 'Speedway Star' this week (July 17 2010) reminds us that 40 years ago Gary Everett, Martyn Piddock, Mal Carmichael, Pete Bradshaw, Phil Bishop and van driver Henrikus Rommoes died when they collied with two lorries at Lokeren, Belgium, on July 14 1970. Three others, Gary Hay, Stan Stevens and Colin Pratt, were seriously injured but survived. The party of riders were mainly associated with West Ham. The group were returning to the UK after racing in meetings at Tilburg and Amsterdam in Holland. I think we should all spare a moment to remember and honour them. JACK KEEN, ERITH, KENT

Being a Don, it's quite poignant that Gary was away riding for another team (not complaining). This had been his best year to date in the sport and being invited, shows that his form was starting to get him noticed. The accident came only a few weeks after he had achieved his first full max. (a match I was fortunate to be at), beating Anders Michanek and George Hunter in the process. Life can be so cruel!
